U.N. Has To Play Key Role

Wed Nov 14, 2001 3:45 pm

Dear All,

With the recent events in Afghanistan in the last couple of days, I think that the biggest role is not in the hands of the United States, but rather in that of the U.N. I really hope that they will do the right thing and come up with a positive solution that will not leave the people of Afghanistan impoverished and miserable yet again.

I have hope that Afghanistan's future is looking brighter now that Taliban rule is collapsing. While I don't know about the Northern Alliance, I pray that they aren't like the Taliban. I don't know how possible it will be to have a democratic government there, as the people have no idea what that is like. But if it is done well, I think the country will be much, much better off than it was under the Taliban.

On a side note, I saw this as an opinion of the WTC attacks.

So.... some punk has just thrown a beer into the face of the biggest guy in the bar.

Now, everyone is starting to back away from this punk, shaking their heads, saying, "Man... you shouldn't have done that.".

So... what's the big guy gonna do?

I think that puts it in pretty simple terms, eh? Any comments? Do you think that what is happening right now is good? Can the U.N. come up with a good solution to save the country once and for all?

Please comment!

Oh yeah, that's what we need. The UN has always been such a big help and supporter of the US in the past. They will blame this years global warming on the bombing of the Taliban and refuse to do anything until the US signs an official UN charter apology for the Kyoto treaty and then argue for months about whether a Palestian state could be established in Afghanistan... and blah....blah...blah...fuck the UN...America needs to take care of this problem by ourselves and in our own way.

I agree that in the past they have been less than supportive of U.S. action, but perhaps this is their time to shine in conjunction with the United States military action, which brought the current events to the front.

I think the U.N. has been stagnant for the last who knows how many years, and now is the time for it to truly do something good for the world and for the people of Afghanistan. It was created for something exactly like this. And the U.S. is part of the U.N., so they will have a say in what happens too.

The U.S. shouldn't and shouldn't have to solve the problem of Afghanistans future and its future government all by itself, and probably wouldn't come up with the best solution all by itself. Yet they are coming up with many good ideas to start the process.
