Cars That Handle Like Boats

Fri Nov 16, 2001 6:40 am

Am I the only one here that likes cars that are huge and handle like boats?

One favorite of mine are the Lincoln Town Car and Continental from the '70s and early '80s. Huge, built like a tank, heavy, big V-8s, and a LOT of body roll!

Unfortunately, these cars are hard to find these days.

Your thoughts?

They are even harder to find here in Europe. I remember once seeing a big chevy (I think), it was so huge that a guy could sit in the engine compartment while working with the engine. Never been in one though.

Hell yes, those cars are awesome. The closest I ever came to owning a big car like that was my '85 Cutlass Supreme.

We just rented a Cadillac in Florida, it handled like a boat, it was pretty big, but it was an awesome car. Very comfortable, powerful V8 Northstar engine, digital dashboard, it was hard to get back into the Honda.

Hey Pat!
As you know I drive a 1977 Lincoln Town Car.
I could have taken you for a ride at one of the SFO gatherings. They actually very easy to find and they are cheap too!
You can pick one up for less than a $1000 sometimes.

Mine is in the front.

I love them, but they are pretty rare in South Africa - this is still my all time favourite from that era - the first front wheel drive Eldorado. However I think the cars of the late fifties handled like pilchard boats. By 1970 the handling was much improved.

Hmmm! Land Yahcts!

When I married my wife in 1990, she had a 74 Plymouth Gran Fury. Nothing like 2 rows of 4 abreast seating. I think it averaged about 8 miles to the gallon! It was a great car to drive. It had a much better ride than the Mazda 626 I was driving at the time and that was with 4 shocks that needed to be replaced.

DeltaSFO and Superfly - question! What car had the largest hood area of all time - If it wasn't this, it must have been close! I think I have the answer somewhere, but will have to dig around for it.

1969 Cadillac Hardtop Sedan deVille - they don't come much bigger than this. I think this is one car that you had to navigate through the traffic rather than drive.

I drove the new Lincoln Town car few months ago..... the car does handle like a boat. Its a very comfortable car but really its not a drivers car.....certainly not for me. That boat feeling on the highway is ridiculous....there is just very little grip and no handling what so ever. I love the tarmac sucking grip provided by most European cars specially BMW,Mercedes even the Jaguar S-type has it. They provide great luxury but at the same time they are light years ahead in terms of feel and handling then the "boat cars"..

Largest hood area? How about the Cadillac Eldorado from about 72-74.

I loved my boat, a 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis! Wonderful car, wish I still had it.

by the way, I think the car with the largest hood may have been the 65-67 Buick Electra 225

My dad had a 1976 Ford Thunderbird that was gold on the sides and creme yellow on top (I am not kidding). It had leather seats, a power glass "moonroof," and a "Quadrasonic" 8-track tape player. This beast was powered by a 466 cui engine. But that hog size only produced 220 hp! The car was great on the road; lots of wallowing over bumps, body roll, etc. They just don't make em like that anymore.

Superfly: Right you are. The very top of the line T-birds for 1976 had special option groups; i.e., the "Lipstick" red edition, and my dads', the "Creme and Gold" edition (much like the sister Mark IV had the Bill Blass and Cartier verions). The car in your picture sure looks like a '76, but it doesn't have the glass roof, nor the gold sides. Thanks for the photo!
