Mercury Cougar XR-7 (Should They Comeback?)

Fri Nov 16, 2001 8:13 am

The Mercury Cougar XR-7 is my favorite 'Muscle Car'. With the 'retro cars' being the new trend, I'd like to see Ford bring this one back. It could be based off the current Mustang frame as it used to be (1967-1973) or the current Lincoln LS/Ford Thunderbird frame.
Any Cougar fans here?  Smile

In 1974, they became luxury coupes.

We don't have Mercury as a brand in Canada anymore  Sad. You can get the current Cougar, but it is sold at Ford Dealers. You can also get the Grand Marquis from Ford Dealers, but strangley you can't get the Crown Vic anymore, unless it is a fleet sale (police, taxi etc).

A new Cougar XR-7 would be cool though Big grin.

Almost always, when a carmaker revives a legendary name, the vehicle that wears it does not live up to the legacy of its ancestors.

A friend of mine has a 1967 Cougar XR-7, which he's in the process of restoring. It's one sweet machine.

I wouldn't want Ford/Mercury to ruin the legacy of the XR-7 by creating a mushy coupe powered by a variant of an engine found in the Taurus and Windstar.
It's a new day. Every moment matters. Now, more than ever.

When I was in High School, my buddy had a '67 XR-7, 351 Cleveland, body wasn't perfect, but it would run until the wheels came off if you let it!

Awesome car.

I don't really think Mercurys are that much more upscale than a plain jane Ford. The Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable are pretty much exactly the same I believe. Same goes for Chevy/Pontiac, and Dodge/Plymouth. Ford's upscale brand is Lincoln.

hey, I have one of those XR-7 cougar things. I think it's like a 1996 model. I can't drive it until march though (when I get my license). I already don't like it... I want a Camaro.  Insane

You mean you'd take a Camero over a Thunderbird?  Wow!
If it was a Firebird Trans Am, I'd understand.

I don't even consider the current Cougar a real Cougar. I just pretend that it doesn't exist.  Smile

Based off the current Mustang frame?

LOL!

I bet you didn't know the current Mustang frame is the same as the old Ford Fairmont's.

The current Cougar has been dropped from the UK (Europe?) because of poor sales. Not surprising really, it was too slow and had lousy handling - a common failure amongst American cars. They have a reputation for being great in a straight line but with an inability to go around corners...

Sure, why not? I got to drive one of the new Cougars last weekend (my sister has one: V-6 and 5-speed manual). Over-all, not a bad little car, but I wouldn't want one. It's a "chick" car in my opinion, but I guess there's a place for that in the market. If there is to be a new XR-7 on this platform, let's do it right. Use the drivetrain from the Contour SVT. The current Cougar is just a 2-door Contour/Mystique/Mondeo, so it shouldn't be that big a deal. With 200+ hp, a manual trans, and limited slip, I might consider it. Throw in the AWD system from the European Mondeo, and I'm sold!

DC10Tony: You say that Fairmont comment like it's a bad thing!

I wish Ford kept the Contour, it was my favourite car by them. I would probably be looking at them now if they weren't replaced by that damn Focus  Sad.

I dated a guy who had a 1969 Cougar convertible. It was fast and I liked the sound of the loud rumbling engine.

Who are those ladies in the photos?
Those are some very exotic ads.  Smokin cool

I actually knew that.
The Ford Fairmont was really a durable car that held up much longer than expected. It was a very boring looking car that wasn't a powerhouse Mustang or LTD. It was very reliable though and I still see many Fairmonts on the road here here in California.
