Owners Or Friends Of Owners Of VW Passats

Mon Nov 19, 2001 7:24 am

Hey, I sold my car last week and I've narrowed my search down to a few cars, The VW Passat, Subaru Legacy, Chrysler PT Cruiser. I'm leaning towards the Passat, a GLX 1.8L Turbo, but I was wondering how their reliability is? Any passat owners out there or does anybody know somebody with a passat?

One of my friends parents have a Passat 1.8T, the station wagon. It's nice to ride in, and moves pretty well. Nice car! As far as I know, they haven't had any problems with it.

Does a 1990 VW Passat CL count? It's a nice enough car. Served us well for the first 7 years or so, then it started having the odd problem with the exhaust and the gearshift every now and then... but now it's back to normal.

I owned a Passat many years ago and loved it. You certainly won't be disappointed if you buy a new one. The Subaru Legacy is also an excellent choice and might well be my choice out of this trio. On the other hand you won't find the versatility of the PT Cruiser in either of the other two, but the Chrysler will feel a bit gutless. If you have a need for speed, you might be better off with either of the others. I suggest you take each one for a lengthy test drive (not around the block), determine your actual needs and go from there.

I think good reliability is pretty much a given on the VW Passat, or any VW  Smile.

The PT is nice too, A lot of people don't like them, I do. They are very practical, look kinda like a hurse though Big grin.

My sister has a 2001 Passat. She Loves it. I drove it for two weeks, and I love it. As far as I know, they are extremely reliable. I'd say it probably beats the pants off any subaru.

I would stick to German cars.

Sleek, elegant and very reliable.

Quite simply, they are effortlessly superior.

BTW, I have a Diesel Passat Estate. Big grin

Thanks everone for your replies. I really love the passat, but everyone keeps telling me to beware because the turbo engine has a lot of expensive upkeep, and that the parts to fix the passat are very expensive. I'm actually buying a used passat--a '00 to be exact. I
I'm shopping the 16-18K price range, and there are lots of fun cars in that range. Any other suggestions?
I live in Utah and winter performance is a must for me.

I have a 2000 Passat with the 1.8T engine. Its definately the best of your choices, its definately not in the same class with the others. It handles and drives like an Audi A4...it has a very solid feel to it. I've been very satisified with it, and when something goes wrong, VW has been more than happy to get it fixed as quickly as possible...I'm very happy with their warranty work.

It handled last winter here in Colorado just fine.

Overall, I'm very happy I chose this over the other cars I looked at from Toyota, Volvo, etc...its just simply above all of its common "competitors." Its a great value and a joy to drive.

Have you considered the Audi A4 1.8T Quattro? You can find a used one in about the price range your looking for if you look hard enough. The VW is also a good choice.

good luck,
