Best T.V. Detective Of All-Time?

Sun Nov 25, 2001 8:08 pm

Gee .... There's so many in the annals of the dreaded TV Private Eye/Detective, it might be hard to decide!

Should you go with .... Kojak .... or possibly Baretta ..... maybe good ol' Barnaby Jones.

Then there's always .......

>> Banacek
>> Richard Diamond
>> Toma (anybody remember this guy?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)
>> Cannon
>> Jim Rockford
>> McCloud
>> Magnum, P.I.
>> Friday & Gannon (Of Dragnet)
>> Barney Miller
>> Columbo
>> Steve McGarrett (Hawaii Five-O)
>> Ironside
>> Mannix
>> Police Woman (Angie)
>> Dan August
>> MacMillan and Wife
>> Tenafly
>> Hec Ramsey

Unbelievable how many of these there were (mainly in the 1970's, when just about everything was a crime show)!!

Got any more?? Post 'em...

My 2 favorites are: Jim Rockford (The Rockford Files) and Kojak (the lollipop-sucking, ultra-cool, billiard-ball-imitating New York detective played by Telly Savalas .......

Then there's always these hard-as-nails beauties!!  Smile ........

Since Telly Savalas grew up in the same town as me, my vote goes to Kojak.

Sorry guys, but you're ALL wrong. Without a doubt the best TV detective of all time was Lt. Frank Drebin (Leslie Neilsen) of Police Squad. His Emmy worthy role was later revisited in the Oscar worthy "Naked Gun" movie and sequels.

Inspector Morse gets my vote too.

If that car of his is coming for sale anytime soon, let me know...  Big grin

Otherwise, my favorites are Columbo, Magnum, Jim Rockford, and whatever character Jack Lord played on Hawaii 5-0.

I could never watch Inspector Morse, because the actor who played him, John Thaw, was in the 1970's series 'The Sweeney'.
The title is the nickname for the London Metropolitan Police's anti-robbery squad.
You won't have seen it in the US, it was far too violent and coarse for Network TV.
Thaw played Jack Reagan, a divorced, hard-drinking, womanising-with only moderate success, determined detective.
In this period, there had been some corruption scandals with the police, and this was never far away from the storylines.
Reagan, and the other main character, Carter, did not always solve the case, and often success was mixed in with the effects of crime.
But there was humour too, and today 'The Sweeney' remains a cult classic in the UK, dated, but that's it's charm.
But it's still gritty stuff, even by today's standards.

Here's another very good choice......

Barry Morse, as Lt. Philip Gerard on "The Fugitive" (1963-1967) !!

Love that show!!

I'm looking for them on DVD some day. There were some great episodes in that series!

I too enjoyed the Rockford Files - really great series at the time

Anybody remember "Petrocelli" from the mid seventies starring Barry Newman

Wouldn't rate it the best by a long shot, but it was quite watchable.

Then there was Cagney and Lacey starring Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly. This was an excellent show, although more police orientated and I hardly ever missed an episode.

As for the best, I think my vote goes to Columbo

His trade mark raincoat, the cigar and oh my God - that ancient grey smoking 1959 Peugeot 403 convertible that he drove - how could one ever forget him!

Behind every "no" is a "yes"

Without a doubt
The first and best
Sherlock Holmes... as played by Jeremy Brett. (Granada TV UK) stories told true to the book and all characters thoughtfully cast

Had not known this.
