Swiss Suicide Statistic

Mon Nov 26, 2001 4:08 am

Hello,

Just looking at the main features on tonight's Mise Au Point (TSR1 20:05) One topic is about suicide.

Someone throws themselves in front of a train every second day in Switzerland.

I am not sure you you, but I was totally shocked. I was aware people did it from time to time, but every 2nd day.

Jeremiah

Aloha 737-200,
How compassionate of you.  Wink/being sarcastic

That's sad, though. And a scary statistic.

I think I'd do it too if I lived in Switzerland.

In Germany, someone throws themself in front of a train every day. Which means, having more than 8 times more people, trains are less popular as a way out in Germany than in Switzerland....

Don't you guys have car exhausts and garden hoses, or ropes, or knives? What is it about the Swiss and trains, then?

BTW: Did you know that suicide is the single most common cause of death among 20-30 year old men in England?

Regards

What is it about the Swiss and trains, then?

Perhaps it is because the Swiss trains are famous for always being punctual. You can plan the time of your demise precisely, to the minute.

Cheers,
Pete

Do you think they have a special team to clear up the mess?

You'd never get this in Britain, the train would a)never arrive or b)too slow to harm you.

On the contrary EGGD, it happens about 250 times per year in the UK. And if Switzerland is anything like the UK, it's not special teams who clear up the mess, it's ordinary ambulance crews, police and railway workers like I used to be. In fact, I had to go to five such incidents in my area over 12 years. It's not nice.

EGGD, I thought they where on the train, as your 2 points are correct. If you guys do not know until recently the UK railways have been vey dagerous as they have not been maintaining them up to standard.

You understood it wrong, there are about 600 suicides in Switzerland every year. I think the "one every second day" is only for trains...  Sad
That's slightly above the average worldwide, Russia, for example, has many more, but they are counted in suicides per 100000 persons, what means that there are fare many suicides in countries like Russia. (Sorry to all russians, it's just an example, we had that in school).

It's much the same here in Denmark. I think that roughly once every week the Copenhagen subway rushhour traffic goes to pieces because of a suicide in central Copehagen. Most of it is drug related.

Train drivers get psychological training in advance, instead of afterwards, in order to overcome the trauma. Because almost for certain it will happen to all of them some day.

Road traffic isn't much different. Only in the statistics it's different. Then it is called "traffic accidents". And the drivers get less crisis assistance.

Hello Fightingfalcon,

Well I go to Switzerland from time to time but about that programme in particular, we get Irish TV in Ireland with a Satellite dish (but you must pay the Swiss TV license)
