Attn Latin Scholars!

Mon Nov 26, 2001 11:42 am

I am a Latin student and we have been assigned to do a "Latin Scrapbook" which shows that Latin is not a dead language. I was wondering if any one knew of any good examples. Thanks.

Seriously, I took Latin for 8 years but sadly and embarrisingly I don't remember anything other than the common phrases. It's kinda hard to learn a dead language due to the lack of practice. It was a requirement for us to take in high school by the way.

Unfornatly as a languauge it is dead, it has very few uses, there are the common pharses, some legal speak, medcine. Thats about all that it is used for I'm afraid of, I took 4 years of it my self.

How can Latin be dead when it provided the basis for the majority of European languages today? Italian evolved out of Latin, as did French and Spanish. Even English is substantially Latin based.

"Illegitimi non carborundum" translates roughly to "Don't let the bastards get you down."

"Manus manum lawatt" translates roughly to "one hand washes the other."

Keep up your Latin studies. It will help you train your thought processes.

Go to http://www.yle.fi/fbc/latini/
it is a website with modern day news in classical latin-updated each week. Maybe an article on Osama Bin Laden will convince people that Latin isn't dead.

Well, I took 3 years of Latin in school and don't remember a thing. I guess I'm not too good of an example on how it's not dead. However, it is used a lot in the legal and medical fields.

Latin is "father language" of Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian and Romanian...so it can't be dead

Just compare a word spoken in each language (not romanian, because I don't know a word of it)

KING:

Spanish: Rey
Portuguese: Rei
Italian: Re
French: Roi

WE ARE SO SIMILAR!! I love that

Well...if you take Latin your teacher addresses you as a Latin Scholar. It is true its not dead, but the EXACT words aren't really spoken today.

"Manus manum lavat" meaning "one hand washes the other".

"Alea iacta est" meaning "the dice is thrown" said by Julius Caesar.

"Quid quid agis prudenter agas et respice finem" meaning "whatever you do, do it good (prudent) and think of the end (i.e.consequences)".

"Carpe diem!" meaning "seize the day".

"Mors certa, hora incerta" meaning "death is certain, the hour (of death) is uncertain".

"Noli me tangere" meaning "Don't touch me" said by Jesus to Mary Magdalena.

"Veni, vidi, vici!" meaning "I came, I saw, I won (conquered)" said by Julius Caesar.

I could think of tons of other quotes...

I had four years of Latin in school and I really enjoyed it!
