Cemetery vandalism 'broke our hearts'
9-year-old's cherished possessions destroyed in weekend mausoleum fire

TRAVERSE CITY - Nine-year-old Hailey Hall-Overholt loved her Britney Spears doll so much she took it with her each time she went to a hospital for radiation treatment to fight a brain tumor.
On Saturday that doll, along with photographs, her obituary, and letters to her written by her family were discovered destroyed in a fire that police believe was intentionally set at a mausoleum where Hall-Overholt is interred.
Hall-Overholt's mother, Kim Hall, is devastated and is offering a $500 reward to anyone who has information about who set the fire at Oakwood Cemetery on Eighth Street in Traverse City.
"The reason that I'm making a big deal out of it, beside the fact that it really broke our hearts, is that some people think it's really funny to knock over grave stones," Hall said. "She suffered so much, and then to not even be able to be buried in peace."
For Hall, the most devastating loss in the vandalism is the Britney Spears doll, a Barbie Doll that played the song "Baby One More Time" that Hailey listened to for comfort while she was alone in an MRI machine or in a radiation room.
Tattered scraps of the doll were found by police in the ashes of the fire.
"When people destroy things like that, I don't think they really know the significance of what they are destroying," said Hall, who visits her daughter's grave two or three times a week.
The pain of this vandalism is even more pronounced because Wednesday would have been Hailey's 10th birthday. She died on Dec. 30, 2000.
A student at Cherry Knoll Elementary School, Hall-Overholt loved to swim, snorkel, fish and ride in boats. She also liked to draw, play Chinese checkers, and watch MTV, although, according to her obituary, she needed to sneak in front of the television in order to do that.
She was 8 years old when she was diagnosed with brainstem glioma.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call the Traverse City Police Department detective bureau at (231) 922-4420.

Obviously the person that started this fire didnt think of how many people would be affected. Yea, its true that most people dont think about that until after it happens. What could this person get for this, maximum? I think they should double whatever the original sentence is. People are supposed to Rest In Peace, not have to put up with fires too. (Unless your in hell obviously).

This is hideous, what was the point?

OMG I would probably end up killing that person who did it if I were her mother or father. This is terrible!!!!

If anyone did anything like that to my family or a friend of our's, they'd have to answer to my 12 Gauge Shotgun.
