A Few Hrs In SFO - What To Do?

Thu Nov 29, 2001 7:07 am

Hi there!

A question for the users from San Francisco: With a few hours (the better part of a day) to spare around the airport in San Francisco, what is there to do? Are there any cool spotting locations around the airport that you can reach without a car from the terminal building? Are there any shopping malls in the vicinity of the airport (to buy DVDs and stuff)? How is shopping AT the airport? Any cool duty free shops around?

Any suggestions of something cool to do? Otherwise I'll just sit in the terminal and read and try to get to a place where good pics can be taken from...

Regards

Nothing really, they closed the prime spotting location at a parking lot close to the runways.

SFO has fallen from grace: gone from a nearly world-class facility, with the new International Terminal, to now -- with the new FAA security restrictions, one of the most boring airports in the US.

I can not remember the name of the little cafe or food outlet but it is in the middle of Terminal F I believe. I was flying the friendly skies (United) my last trip to SFO, so it is either F or E.

There is a great little cafe where you can get Sandwhiches on sourdough bread and or great clam chowder served in a sour dough bread bowl. The soup and bread are excellent.

PHLFlyer: Is it airside or before the passport control? I'll make a note of it, and try it for myself...

Any other things to do? Anyone there this Sunday?

I would say come up to have a beer downtown but I don't think you have enough time.

Well, the plane is supposed to depart at 4:45 pm. I'm pretty sure I'll be awake most of the night before (from 2 or 3am onwards) until the departure time, so I've got all morning free. But I'm not sure I want to go downtown - sounds like too much hassle and I am inherently lazy. Also, I'm 19, so I don't think they'd serve me beer in America anyway, and I'm not much of a drinker.

I'll probably just get a cab to the nearest shopping mall and spend one or two hours there, get back to the hotel, check out and grab my stuff and head for the airport. Alternatively, I stay in the hotel and read until 12, go to the airport and checkin as soon as possible, and spend some more time reading or watching planes...

What are the opening times of shopping malls in San Francisco on Sundays? Which ones are close to the airport? And what are shopping facilities and prices like at the airport (especially for DVDs and videos)?

Sounds like you do have some time to spare. As far as malls go, I avoid them as much as possible. I can assure you that the malls here have nothing unique on VHS or DVD that you can't get whare you live or whare you are visiting.
The Serramonte Mall (Colma) is the closest to the airport. Then there is Stonestown which is in San Francisco.
SFO is kind of isolated from everything else. I can't wait for the BART extention to be completed.

It is airside. Just look for a long line of people if it is around lunch time.

Superfly,

I thought Serramonte Mall was in Daly City or So. San Fran. BTW, it's not worth going there.

Colma might be an interesting place because there are far more dead people there than alive! Visit the many cemeteries that town is famous for.

Errr, I'll stick to the original plan then. Airport, it will be!

No way I'm gonna visit cemetaries for fun. I already thought it was tasteless when we visited the cemetery in Rome on a school trip - as far as I'm concerned, I'd rather not think of a group of tourists walking across graves (be they mine, or my relative's or graves in general) and joke about the size and stylishness of the gravestones...

And somehow the shopping mall thing sounds like too much trouble.

So can I reach that said restaurant from the international terminal once I'm airside? Or do I need to go through passport control twice (a hassle I'd rather like to avoid, if my suspicions about queue lengths in the US are accurate)

Cheers for all the infos

No. The flights were too cheap to resist. GBP 40 plus tax, a total of 97 pounds (roughly 150 dollars). And VS is my favourite airline, so I love flying with 'em. And the fact that I could convince my parents to pay for it as special advance 20th birthday present (birthday is in January) helped, too  Big grin

Damn...that's dirt cheap, Y class? Or can you upgrade to J? SO you are just going to see SFO airport? I'd suggest you go downtown if you are going all the way there for that.

Err, I never got the hang of the letters for classes. It's economy, of course. Do you think they offer Upper Class at these fares?

I basically just go for the fun of the flight, and to relax for a weekend (although I'll probably end up taking some coursenotes with me, as a project is dues soon). Possibly, I might want to buy a few cheaper + more extras filled R1 DVDs while there, but other than that, it's purely for fun. So I don't think I can be bothered to go all the way to downtown San Francisco. It's a beautiful city (been there last year), but I'll stick to the general airport area...

Hmmm...

There's a DVD shop in the United concourse, but that's past security so that doesn't help you any. You could possibly run into me somewhere along the line, being as I work at the airport both of those days  Smile Which specific dates are you coming? I'm sure we could work something out... I know I can get past any security checkpoint with my badge, but if I can escort people is a different story altogether (ie I don't think I can)

I'll try and remember what's there... there's some good shops in Concourse A (IT, Virgin's concourse @ SFO) as well, and to get good pictures, I reccomend hanging out in the Caffe del Mundo I think it's called, it's got a fantastic view of the end of runways 1L/R.

OH-LGA: This weekend. I'd probably be too tired on Saturday afternoon, and all I'll want to do is go to the hotel and sleep (I don't want to mess up my biological clock too much for the short weekend), but on Sunday, I'd be happy to meet you.

Mmmh. Which reminds me. Aren't you the user I very nearly was supposed to meet at LHR in July? Where everything got messed up because I had to be there and help my new flatmate move in? Sorry about that - hope you aren't planning on revenge or anything  Big grin Big grin

Anyway: How free is movement at SFO airport? I mean, once I'm airside in one terminal, is it connected to all other terminal areas (like Heathrow) so I could walk around between all the terminals freely, or would I have to go through security half a dozen times to get from one terminal to the next?

I'm with everyone else in here, I'd shoot for downtown if I were you. Unfortunately however, downtown SF is about 20 miles(?) north of the airport. But the airport shuttle gets you there in about 20 minutes for 5 bucks. Have them drop you off anywhere in the area and just walk around the Market Street area. Take your coursework over to a restaurant or cafe and just chill. After that, take a cable car ride over to the Wharf and ride it back. You still should have plenty of time to make it back to the airport. By the way, to catch the shuttle back to the airport, just hang around any hotel and tell them to call the shuttle for you. You would of course have to pretend that you are a patron of the hotel. But then again, those bellhops will probably call one for you anyway if you give them a couple of bucks.

Have fun!

Huh? I rode the Super Shuttle to SF and it cost $17.00! one-way. That was on September.

Whoah! 17 bucks! You got taken dude! I've never had to pay more than $10 (plus tip of course) to get to the city via shuttle. I wouldn't ride the Super Shuttle again. Man there are a multitude of companies working the airport. If you have to pay more than 10 bucks move on to the next van. They'll be happy to drive you to the city for less I'm sure.

To get the $5 deal, all you have to do is hang around a little while and be one of the last people in the van. If they see you walking over to the next shuttle they'll offer you a discount for having to squeeze you in. This is what I used to do all the time.

Unfortunately, there's a separate security checkpoint at each concourse/gate area, so you can't go from say DL to UA without going out/in security again.  Sad

You have a little over 24 hours in SFO... you get here about 2:05pm Saturday... ILUV767 and I will actually be at the airport at that time... maybe we'll give you a true airliners.net/BASA welcome  Smile

Have a fantastic trip to San Francisco, hope to see you soon!
