You are a dimwit aren't you?
Firstly, don't refer to me as "you guys". I am not Russian; in fact far from it.
Since when has Russia had no influence in Central Asia? Do you even know what Central Asia is? You know...those countries which are called Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan? Russian influence in these countries is still very high, and in some respects higher than ever. These countries depend on Russia for their economic survival, no matter what some of their despotic leaders may say (for example, Turkmenbashy, the murderous despot who dictates over Turkmens, who has been cuddling up with the West, in particular America, over the last few years).
America is currently using a base in Uzbekistan for supplying their forces in their revenge against Afghanistan. This was only made possible by gaining the tacit approval of Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin. America has requested the use of bases in Tajikistan for their attacks in Afghanistan. Slight problem; Vladimir Putin has yet to approve this. Unlike you, officials in Washington are not so stupid as to suggest that they just walk into these Central Asian countries without approval from Moscow.
Going by what you said, America supported South Vietnam, Soviet Union supported North Vietnam; NORTH Vietnam won....you LOST....Russia supported the Northern Alliance for years before 11/9 (mainly because of tacit Taliban support for the Chechen terrorists), America supported the Mujahaddin during the Soviet Occupation (which is where the Taliban had its foundings)....America gets screwed over....America..WHAT A LOSER NATION.
These events, whilst they are true, do not have a place in understanding the world NOW!
Russian influence in this region is hardly nothing.....in fact, their influence is rapidly gaining, and not only in the Muslim Middle East, but also in Israel as well. Russia (Soviet Union era) has always had a cordial relationship with countries such Iraq and Iran, and since the break-up of the Soviet Union and the emergence of the Russian Federation, cordial relationships have been formed with Saudi Arabia, Israel, United Arab Emirates and all other nations in the Middle East. The Russian government has managed to hold together relationships with Muslim nations and the Jewish one. I seem to remember that airlines from Russia were the only ones to serve both Palestine and Israel (until Gaza Airport was closed). Can you say the same about America, or any other MAJOR country?
As to the Russians "rushing" into Pristina and Kabul. In particular Kabul. They didn't exactly rush in without an invite from the Northern Alliance. As you probably know, Russia has been the major international supporter of the Northern Alliance (i.e. they haven't just jumped on the bandwagon in the last 3 months), and the fact remains that there are still a lot of Afghani's who do not trust America; this is saying something, especially after the Russians (read: Soviets) fought a bloody war in Afghanistan in the early 1980s.
Russia is a country which is rebuilding politically, economically and socially; in some respects slowly and other rather rapidly. They are a nation which is wanting cordial relations with all countries, with those relationships being formed on the basis of dialogue and understanding. And until you stop thinking of Russia as the Evil Communist Empire, you will never understand the world as it is today.
