Taxis In Your City

Fri Nov 30, 2001 1:30 am

What are the taxi models in your city?

Here are my 2 cents.

In Toronto, Canada (my city) it's basically all the North American big cars like Crown Victoria, recently there are an influx of Intrepid, Lumina, Impala and even Camry's, after the city hall cracked down on old and broken taxis. There are minivans like Sienna, Caravan and Windstars. A number of old Caprice's are still running.

In Orlando I'd seen full size vans sitting 7 serving as taxis, quite economical I think.

In New York, 4 basic types (as in 1999): Crown Vic, Caprice, Venture and Odyssey/Oasis minivans; I always picked a minivan, all minivans had 5 seats only, the 3rd row was removed  Sad Is it still the same now?

In Honolulu I'd seen a long wheeled based Mercedes taxi.

In Montreal it used to be small Japanese/German cars, not sure if it's the case now.

How about your city/cities you'd visited?

London taxis are the most recognisable in the world. They are huge inside and have a turning circle that'll take your breath away.

London taxi drivers have to know every street in London to be licensed - literally. For those of you not familiar with the city, Manhattan it ain't. It's an organic mass of lanes, mews, weird little streets that has grown up over two millenia into one of the biggest and most densely-populated cities in the world. To learn EVERY SINGLE STREET takes years, so wannabe cabbies work as parcel couriers, minicab drivers etc. This process is called The Knowledge, and takes about three to five years. It takes as long to be a London cabbie as it does to get a degree.

In Stockholm, Taxi Stockholm, the biggest taxi company, has mostly Volvo and Mercedes.

The other companies usually have Volvos but you can also see som Mercedes' as well.
The minivans are often Volkswagen or Toyota.

The London taxis are ugly! I don't like that kind of old style design. OK, it's a matter of taste, but I just don't like them.

The London cabs may be ugly, but they sure get the job done.

The two big taxi companies in my city have old beat up ford and chevy station wagons as well as some old chevy caprices. A third illegitimate company called "Hippie Cab" has a toyota euro-style van, an older ford windstar minivan, and I think another ford euro-type van. I highly doubt this company has the appropriate insurance and I hope their first accident takes them off the road for good.

Mostly just Crown Vics today. Most if not all of the Caprices are gone. There are some Odysseys and maybe a Venture or two, but they're probably no more than 5% of the fleet. I haven't seen any of the Ford Explorers in a while (riders liked them, but the drivers were spending too much on fuel).

In Boston we have your usual Crown Vics and Caprices, but minivans are becoming more noticable around the city. The city mandates that the basic colour of the car must be white, so the days of a yellow cab are now gone.

I think what Cedarjet said sounds like a dream. Going out on a vast generalization here, but Boston taxi driver's are generally the worst and rudest drivers, and are more often than not new immigrants from the Caribbean, Africa, or the Middle East, with less than perfect English and will generally go out of their way just to get a higher fare.

In Singapore, we have 3 big taxi companies, CityCab, Comfort, and Tibs. They have Toyota, Mercerdes, Nissan, and Volkswagen. However, more unemployed people are becoming taxi drivers and business for each of them are dropping fast!!!!!!!!!! The government still wants to bring out 400 New Taxis and we already have about 18,000 on the road with poor business, oh man, what is the government thinking?

In Chicago there are a lot of brands. The most recognizable is the Ford Crown Victoria, Chevy lumina and Impala, and some vans too and some Mercury towncars.

Las vegas has the same thing as Chicago.
When they stop using them in Chicago, they sell them as used cars. I know some people who have them and they run good! I might get one cause they are really cheap!

In Melbourne, they are all Holden (GM) Commodores and Ford Falcons, with Ford Falcons greatly outnumbering Holden's. There are also some Mercedes van taxis.

Sad to say but the company that builds London taxis is now our second largest motor manufacturer after MG Rover.

Apart from that we have.....well, TVR!

Embarrassing really.

Here in Sydney, most taxis are either Ford Falcons or Holden Commodores.

Most taxi drivers can't speak English properly and have no idea where they are going!

--> "London taxi drivers have to know every street in London to be licensed"

Well more times than not, they couldn't find my road when I lived in London, or they wouldn't take me south of the river.

Good old london cabs. Rarer than rocking horse shit after 11pm as well....
And they're a rip.

I used to see a Volvo 940, and a Volvo 240 in Toronto, never tried them though.

In Hong Kong it's either Toyota Crown or Nissan Cedric, I think Toyota taxis rule the road.

CcrlR:
Any full-size vans or minivans seating 7 serving as taxis in Vegas?

Airmale:
Do Toyota Corolla taxis rule in Pakistan as well as Afghanistan as well? Saw a lot of Corollas serving as Kabul taxis in tv lately.  Smile

In Belgium it's almost like in the Netherlands : mostly Mercedes E class and a few C class and S class. And from time to time you see some other brands like Peugeot, Renault, Nissan, etc.

Here in Geneva, it's the whole range from Toyota Camry to Mercedes 600 S-class - and the price is identical for each one! We even have a few guys who drive 1970's Chevy Caprice and Caddy's.

I love the London Cabs. 5 people in the back seat comfortably, and you're right, the turning circle is amazing. The only truely purpose-built taxi cab in the world.

But I dislike the new version which has popped up over the past decade or so. I like the old one.

What a great topic!! Not being sarcastic here one bit! Very interesting!

Taxis in St. Louis are also large American cars like the Crown Victoria, the Caprice, Grand Marquis, Town car. There are a small number of minivans like the caravan and Lumina APV. I have seen Luminas, and a Roadmaster wagon too.

Here in Buenos Aires there are over 33000 taxis, all painted in yellow and black. Most of them are Renaults and Peugeots.

In Caracas the taxis don't have any particular color and most of them are the North American big cars from the 70s .
