Why All The Talk Of Recession?

Mon Dec 10, 2001 12:11 am

I was reading articles on Yahoo about aviation and came across an article with the title 'Recession Hurting Christmas Mood...With 800,000 Americans Laid Off Since Sept. 11, Recession Bringing a Blue Christmas for Many'. A recession is 2 consecutive quarters of falling real GDP so why all the talk of recession?

Maybe because last week President Bush admitted that the economy is in a recession, and most economists have been saying the economy started into a recession last March.

So it is a Bush recession.

...sorry, but I couldn't resist.

um no.

The economy dosent react just because he came into office. At an average the economy sees the effects of what happened 18 months earlier.

The US is in slowdown not recession , that is a big difference.Japan is the only G8 country predicted to have negative growth this year I think.

Many Americans dont understand complicated talk about GDP, negative growth, etc. So its easier to say recession, even though technically we are not there yet.

Whether we are or not...It's just a word, and although the sun would continue to rise and set and the birds will still migrate and return, the more emotional people will allow this abstraction to change the way they live. -- As in every other "recession" or slowdown in my memory since the very early 80's: I chose not to participate, and will continue not to partake.

The US economy has been in recession since late Q1 of this year, and is threatening to drag Canada along with it since we are so dependant on exports.

The US GDP growth is forecasted around 1.5% I think.

Strangely, all the talk of recession doesn't seem to have brought much of a change in terms of consumer confidence. I recently had to write a media release explaining that consumer confidence here in Manitoba has hardly changed at all since August, in spite of world events and talk of recession. In fact, there's more optimism now than there was at the beginning of the year.

This was also reflected in a Globe and Mail article yesterday about how some retailers are saying that sales are still going well thanks to bargain-hunters and generous financing terms for mortgages and car loans.

I should have credited the quote to CPDC10-30, not 'CPDC-10'. Sorry.

Ironically the market is doing well during a recession and some even feel its a bull market. Also, as someone mentioned, consumer confidence is doing well considering. Probably because people are looking to the market to gauge. From my perspective, all is well. My job is secure and my stock is doing quite well. But people are being let go and that's not fun to watch. I hope things get turned around soon. BTW, Japan is in recession, too. (for what its worth).
