Most Dangerous City Then And Now

Mon Dec 10, 2001 5:18 am

What do you think is the most dangerous city then and Now. I have to say MIAMI FL was the most dangerous city in the 20s and 80s but not any more. Some people think NY is very dangerous but it isnt. Miami has a higher crime rate but not as many crimes. So what is your vote

I don't exactly get excited at the idea of going to certain sections of LA, especially after nightfall.

I think every city has its rough sections, or in other words, places you wouldn't want to take your kids. NY, Chicago, DC, Boston, LA, Houston, Detroit, etc.....

Detroit has been rather notorious for a long time...but now I think it ranks behind Baltimore in the murder rate.

By world standards, most North American cities barely qualify as dangerous, though some neighbourhoods within then probably do.

Probably the best contenders for World's Most Dangerous City are Freetown, Sierra Leone in the 'war-torn' category and Cape Town, South Africa in the 'peacetime' category.

I think LA is NOT as dangerous as you guys think...I've been through Compton, Watts and Inglewood with 0 problems...I bet Toulouse is more dangerous than LA!  Smile

driving through compton is nothing! i have stayed with my friends out there, walked to the grocery stores at night and sat out on the porch drinking 40's with my friends who live there. I really think compton is not any where close to what its cracked up to be. i mean for a white boy from, Scottsdale, AZ driving around CPT in a Mustang GT, without a problem would seem impossible but hey no problems at all! Everyone I come in contact with there is really nice. But i would want to anger some of those fools thats for sure! I would think some south american cities are much more dangerous than anything in the U.S., how about Beiruit, or israel/palestine?

I always thought Gary, Indiana had the highest homicide rate o fall the major cities. Been like that for a while now I think.

I've always felt that L.A., Chicago, New York, Las Vegas, Philly, Pittsburgh, Boston, parts of Miami, PHOENIX (by far!), and DENVER were very, very dangerous places.

I would not be caught dead in Denver under any circumstance, nor Phoenix. NEVER.

The most dangerous city worldwide has got to be Jerusalem, ugh, I'd never ever want to go there.

In fact pretty much every city in Africa and the middle east is dangerous, I'd stay away from it period.

Aloha you dont get out much to those cities do you?? I lived in Denver for 10 years and Phoenix, well north scottsdale area for 5 years. If you are afraid of being in these two cities then you must be afraid of your own shadow!

No I've never been there but I had a great aunt who lived in both Denver and Phoenix, nd she vowed never to return. I heard lots of horror stories from her, including a drive-by which happened one block from her house.

Scary stuff.

Trickijedi,

Correct. During the 80s the city of Gary average about one murder per 1,000 residents. Today, the crime rate has considerably gone down, relatively speaking, especially when Superfly left for California.  Big grin

Aloha- As for your aunt who didn't want to return to PHX because of a drive by shooting, I don't know how to word this, but, dude, your aunt is living in the ghetto!! She shouldn't blame Phoenix, there is a ghetto in every city. If she couldn't afford better in Phoenix, she probably isn't going to afford better anywhere else.

Every city has drive by shootings. It is known however that Phoenix and Denver are probably overall on the safer side than a lot of other cities in the US.

BTW, both LA and NY are probably statistically the safest cities in the country right now.

Trickijedi are Lortab 7.5mg are both right.
Gary, Indiana is a pretty rough city. It got worse after I left in 1984. I guess they couldn't cope. Big grin

Despite all the horror stories you hear about in big cities, it's the smaller towns that are really bad.

Fresno, Ca (200 miles noth of LA)
Scarred the crap out of me!
Also Peoria, Illinois (150 miles southwest of Chicago)
and Baton Rouge, Louisiana are pretty rough towns.

The most dangerous part of Miami is Liberty City. The most popular type of murder there is probly drive by shootings I live 10 Miles from there but in one of the safest areas in South Florida. It is a gated area. At 6pm- 7am M.P.D. are there. Probly three units. Also Plam Beach has some bad parts to. And ORLANDO also.

I remember reading somewhere that Rio De Janeiro was one of the most crime-ridden cities in the world. I would also have to say Cape Town is up there, along with Jerusalem for crime. Compared to these cities, places in the US are realtive havens.

Superfly, I've heard Baton Rouge is pretty bad too, which surprised me. I live in New Orleans and thought our crime was worse, but apparently not. I guess I never realized how much goes on there. I've also been told that in the little country towns outside of BR where a lot of my relatives live there is a lot of drug trade and stuff going on just like the big city.

Gary, Indiana and New Orleans, Louisiana

while the highest drug rates are in

Rockford, Illinois

At least a few years ago, Washington DC had a pretty high homocide rate. The number was around 65 per 100,000 residents. This compares to cities such as San Jose and Portland where that rate was around 8 per 100000.

New Orleans, (Camden, Newark and Irvington NJ). Gaza, TLV, LA, Detroit, Fort Worth, Allentown, PA. DC ain't as bad as it was during the Mayor Barry scandal. But it has a ways to go. I hear Philidelphia is in that somwhere. Omaha was rated as the worst city in crime. The best was Minniappolis. I guess Gov Ventura set the criminals in their ways!

Speaking of smaller cities, I know that Mobile, Alabama was considered one of America's most dangerous cities just a few years ago. They've done a fairly decent job of turning that around recently, tho.

Montgomery, tho... Ewww...

But I would definitely agree that the worst cities would be the Beiruts and Mogadishus of the world.

Beirut?

Maybe 10 years ago but surely not now - it is a very pleasant, Mediterranean city. I was there last year and they have done a heck of a lot of rebuilding and it now has an almost non-existent crime rate compared to many Western cities.

I have lived in Nairobi for a while and also Lagos and Accra and I can say that I have never felt as safe in Boston/Chicago/Milwaukee/Saint Denis/ Amsterdam alone at night as I did in Africa.

There maybe pickpockets etc.. but nobodys going to shoot you for your Puma's. however if your talking about rape thats a different story, African cities are notorious for rape.

From what I have heard from friends Newark is no picnic.

Correct me if I´m wrong ;I think Baghdad,Port-au-Prince,Kigali,Colombo,Kinshasa,
Jakarta and Phnom-Penh as well are no pleasure cruise at all.
But I agree that african cities like Mogadishio and Freetown are probably the most dangerous cities.

South Florida has bad neighborhoods wherever the local populace has gotten it in its' head that crime and civil rights are the same thing.

City politicians from absolute s**tholes like Riviera Beach and Overtown have abject poverty, rampant drug problems and violent street crime to contend with, but the almost universal theme is "They're our problems, stay out! And by the way keep shipping tax money to us...and while you're at it, help us fund this 200 million dollar 'restoration' project by building a fancy high class shopping mall in a ghetto." Pathetic.

The most dangeous cities in South America a couple of years back were: Bogota, Sao Paolo, and Buenos Aires. Today Quito is becoming very dangerous, almost like Bogota (I hate to say it because Bogota is a great city) You could put Quito as one of the dangerous cities in Latin America.

Before it wasn't as bad. You wouldn't hear about things you hear like today. For example, the other day four guys with guns (They were real) attacked a little kid to take his bike away. Its becoming a real chaos. You can't park your car anymore without getting your mirrors, radio, emblems, or tires stolen. Sometimes it takes less than a minute for your entrie car to dissapear, not to mention that they'll choke you to death to get your car stolen. Ten years ago Quito was one of the safest cities.

On another note,

My guess for the safest city in the world is probably Pyongyang, North Korea. First of all, there's hardly any traffic, second of all there are police and soldiers at every corner watching the citizens. Any other opinions?

I heard somewhere that Memphis TN has the worst crime record per capita for all US cities over 500k.

As for safe cities, it may well be Pyongyang...but if it takes absolute authoratarianism, dictatorship, famine and indoctrination to eliminate all crime, I'll take a free city with crime anytime.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.
