FIFA's Player Of The Year...

Tue Dec 18, 2001 1:32 am

Real Madrid's Luis Figo has been named Fifa 2001 World Player of the Year.

Figo, the 2000 European Footballer of the Year, fended off competition from Manchester United's David Beckham and Real team-mate Raul to win the award.

Portuguese midfielder Figo has enjoyed an outstanding year for both club and country.

He scored three goals in Real's first four games in the Champions League and helped Portugal remain unbeaten as they qualified for the 2002 World Cup.

Figo said: "It is a privilege to receive this award.

"I am lucky to win today.

"And I would like to thank my team-mates for helping me achieve this."

And just to contradict FIFA's award...

Michael Owen has been named European Footballer of the Year.

The Liverpool and England striker becomes the first English winner of the award since Kevin Keegan in 1979.

Owen wins the award after finishing top of a poll of journalists conducted by France Football magazine.

The 22-year-old is the sixth British winner of the award since its inception in 1956.

Owen hit the headlines by grabbing a stunning hat-trick in England's magnificent 5-1 victory over Germany in Munich last September.

But he has also had a superb season domestically, scoring twice in the FA Cup final win over Arsenal as Liverpool won an unprecedented treble.

Figo didn't deserve that award. I'm still waiting for Ryan Giggs to get something like this.  Sad

Who do you think will win?

Hapoel "Keter" Tel Aviv or Parma (Italia)

I think Parma will win the game. They are much better.
But I Hope there'll be a little wonder and Tel Aviv wins, because there are to many Italian Teams and only few Isreal teams. (is there another team from Israel in the UEFA-Cup or UEFA-Champions-League?)
