Suggestion On Freeing Up Server Space

Tue Dec 18, 2001 9:18 am

Awhile back, Johan put out a flash report about how he was running short on server space. This of course were at least in part to blame for the moratorium on new users as well as the proliferation of those popup ads.

Well, here's my suggestion:

Get rid of unneccessary and redundant pictures.

I know this is going to infuriate some of our photographers, but just hear me out.

Take the American MD-80 as an example. The database shows 769 pictures of American MD-80's.

Do we REALLY need 769 picturs of American MD-80's? I mean how many possible shots, angles, and so on do we need? Do we REALLY need a departure, landing, port, starboard, above, below, tail, cockpit, landing gear, sunny, shadow, lavaratory, first class, coach, night, cluster shot of every single one of the 270 or so MD-80's that American has?

Don't you think that's guilding the lilly a bit?

My apologies to the photographer, but take a look at this shot.

It's partly cloudy, and the plane is not very well lit.

Or take these three shots:

They are not bad in and of themselves, but apart from the fact that the reg #'s and the cloud formations in the background are different, THEY ARE THE EXACT SAME PICTURE.

If Johan can assign say a dozen moderators to go through the entire database, and weed out redundant and "borderline" pictures like these, judging from what iI've seen, he could free up at least 50% of the bandwidth that he is currently using.

David B.: An aspiring photographer?

I think the database is great as it is. There are so many high quality pics of so many aircraft. I think deleting the similiar shots would be a shame. The reason many people come to this site is its great collection of photographs. I'd hate to see us lose some.

I think you are misunderstanding me. I'm not suggesting that we delete any of the images per se. What I am suggesting is that we get rid of DUPLICATE pictures.

Like the example I used with the three AA MD-80's, do we really need three identical views of the same aircraft where the only difference is the reg #?

If AA has 270 MD-80's, fine. Keep at least one picture of each one. But we do not need the same 44 different angles of all 270 individual aircraft.

That's the difference.

I hear you, but I think the greatest reason people come here is the photos. And there is a tough screening process that makes sure only the highest quality pics are uploaded. I think it's great to have so many high quality pics of so many aircraft.

But I understand you point. If you go through the recently uploaded photos, you can see 15-20 of the same exact shot by the same photographer, and it does get repetitive.

I guess it comes down to having an extensive database of high quality pictures or a 'limited' extensive database of high quality pictures. Right now, Johan has the final say on most pics that are uploaded. If server space is at that much of a premium, I don't think he would add as many shots as he currently does.

I agree, but only in cases where the redundant shots are from the same photographer.

Some other ways to get some more space:

Delete forum threads after a set period of time, say three to six months of archive. Exception could be made for threads with 'historical significance' like 9-11 or the Concorde crash.

Delete inactive user accounts. If there are no posts from a username for a certain period of time (again say three to six months), the last email address on file for that name is sent a warning and the username is deleted the following week if still not used. I'd be willing to bet a good chunk of a.net's 10k users are duplicates or inactive.

I say delete all the profile crap, except for say an e-mail address, if one was provided. I dont know if that would really free up any space, but oh well. I say delete all old topics after about a month, who acutally searches for a topic? Very very few i must say.
