Security Alert In English Channel

Sat Dec 22, 2001 3:13 am

A major security operation is now underway in the English Channel.
The cargo ship MV Nisha has been intercepted by the frigate HMS Sutherland and boarded by Royal Marines, after intelligence reports of 'a significent threat to national security'.
The ship, whose largely Indian crew are co-operating with the Marines and anti-terrorist police, is carrying 23,000 tons of raw sugar.
Initial searches have found nothing, more in-depth searches will follow.
The ship last docked in Dibojti (SP), which borders Sudan and Yemen, which has known Al-Queda cells.
MV Nisha was due to dock at Silvertown in East London.

"Dibojti (SP), which borders Sudan and Yemen"

Aren't Sudan and Yemen on opposite sides of the Red Sea?

My mistake, I meant to say Somalia.
So far nothing has been found on the ship, but it's moored off the Isle Of Wight, and a more extensive search is being carried out.

Hey GDB, was this ship Stormed?

From the name it sounds like an Indian registered ship. Also do you happen to know to which shipping company it belongs?

It's owned by an Indian shipping firm, who have offices in London.
The tabloid press may say that the Royal Marines special forces, the SBS, stormed the ship, but as the crew co-operated fully, (who wouldn't with a heavily-armed Type 23 Frigate bearing down on you?), it's more likey that the SBS, customs and police officers, boarded with consent.
No idea yet if it was a geniune attempt at an attack, or if it was loaded with explosives or chem/bio. weapons.
