What Makes A Country Great?

Mon Jan 07, 2002 3:34 pm

Well? Is it the geography? The people? The Government?

Its the idea.

Sure, people and geography contribute, but overall it is the idea behind the nation that makes it great.

I shall explain tomorrow... gotta get to sleep soon, lest I sleep in tomorrow.

The word America in any countries name will make it a good country, or a good poser.

What makes a country great? Definitely not size, that's for sure. I can take the example of myself and Malta: my parents are Czech but I was born in Malta and I've lived here for almost all my life. I love Malta because it has accepted me as one of its people, not asking anything in return, awarding me citizenship and taking care of me; I love the culture and language; I love the traditions of the people and the folklore, and I love the landmarks and places of interest. I am proud to be a Maltese citizen.

I agree with Dasa that it's largely a matter of opinion.

Many would use military might as a measure, others would use economic influence. A religious person might be more interested in the use of moral overtones in laws and public life, libertarians would be more interested in the extent to which freedoms and civil liberties are safeguarded, left-leaners would focus on social egalitarianism, and so on.

What makes a country great?

1. Democracy
2. People
3. Scenery
4. A warm climate
5. 20-something girls dressed in skimpy outfits
6. Cheap petrol prices
7. A large number of Burger King and KFC restaurants

I think that just about completes my list...

In my opinion;

1) Great Weather

2) Great Scenery

3) Great People

4) All the other stuff....democracy etc.

Australia, South Africa and Brazil are my favourites.

Britain is ruled out on the 1st count! Big grin
