Ever Met Anyone Famous?

Sat Jan 12, 2002 9:48 am

When I about 12-13 and on vacation with my family at the Swan Hotel at Disney, I had the one in a million chance of seeing Joe DiMaggio. Yep, me and my dad were sitting in the lobby and Joe and his bodyguard just walked right by us. I wanted to get up and meet him, but he looked like he was going somewhere, so I just watched him walk by. I couldn't believe I had the priviledge to see a REAL baseball player and an American icon.

So have you met anyone famous?

I knew people from my college who made the NBA. A couple of first round picks and a second round pick. One has a bad reputation and has been around with the Knicks, Spurs, Blazers, Wizards and Heat.

By the way, I forgot to mention that just seeing someone famous, hardly counts as actually "meeting that person," as I in fact talked and drank beer with Alice Cooper.

Bonnie Raitt (nice lady), saw Dennis Quade (seemed like an ass), saw Alec Baldwin (I almost passed out.)

A friend of mine was walking in the French Quarter eating an icecream cone. Some lady walked out of a store not looking where she was going and bumped into him, knocking his ice cream all over herself. She expressed a few choice words. He looked up, realized it was Martha Stewart, said, "oh crap" and ran off down the street. Said she seemed like a real bitch.

Somebody else I know was staying in a hotel in D.C. for a business trip. All of these people kept running up and down the hall screaming. Finally she goes out into the hall to see what all the fuss is about. A young man came out of his room. He apologized about all the noise. Her being a very outspoken woman said, "What in the hell is going on here? I'm trying to get some sleep. I have a meeting in the morning." He apologized and asked her if she knew who he was. She said "no." He said, well ma'am, I play baseball for the NY Yankees (or something like that.) She said, "Well, I still have no idea who you are and I'd like to get some sleep." She went back into her room. He came to her door and asked her if he could make it up to her by buying her breakfast in the morning. She said fine. The next morning she met him in the lobby. He asked her again if she knew who he was. Finally he told her, he was Usher. She was like "who???" He said, "Lady, I'm a singer." She goes, "Well, if you're not Tina Turner or Earth, Wind, and Fire I don't know who you are." What's really funny, is that when she went home she called her sister (who related the story to me) and told her, "Guess who I met! I met FLUSHER!!!"

My mom saw Jerry Springer entering the Intercontinental hotel this summer while she was on a business trip in Chicago. She had no idea who it was, until my aunt (who went to Chicago with her to go shopping) said to her "That's Jerry Springer!!!"

Ironically, they saw him again 2 days later while at a resturant having lunch...

(She was thinking about taking me on that trip, but didn't. I would have gone nuts when I saw Jerry Springer, or any celebrity.)

Bishop Muzarewa from Zimbabwe. He is apparently a national hero there. He is a United Methodist bishop who was jailed for political reasons. Apparently he made the news again today, asking President Mugabe to stop the white-land rioting so that there can be a peaceful election coming soon.

I met him when I was less than ten years old -- probably when I was about seven years old. I had heard so much about him and his struggles, and our church (a United Methodist church) participated in a letter-writing campaign to help get him freed from jail. He visited the U.S. and came to our church to thank us. I cried when I finally got to shake his hand. He apparently liked what he saw in me, and he sent me a panoramic shot of Jerusalem with a personal dedication (frame and all.) It still hangs in my old room back at my parents' house.

I've seen Oprah Winfrie's boyfriend, Stedman something, at PHX last year. He's very tall, about 6'4", very thin, and likes to eat a lot. He was in front of us in line at the food court at PHX and he bout 2 tacos, some soup, salad, and a beverage. He seemed down-to-earth and really nice, and minded his own business, and was very respectful.

I've met news personalities from Cleveland, like Bill Martin, Stephanie Schafer, Andre Bernier, and Dick Goddard.

I've also met my city's mayor several times. I live in a suburb of Cleveland, and my dad went to high school with the mayor, so it's no biggie to go say "Hello" to him.

Although I don't remember, my grandmother told me that JFK picked me up and talked to me when he was running for president. I've met many famous people since, but this seems to mean more to me than any of the others I remember.

In the late fall/early winter of 1975, I was a member of a current-affairs club at my college (Trinity College, CT). We invited all the announced or likely candidates for the next year's presidential election to come speak before our club. Jimmy Carter was one of the two who showed (the other was Fred Harris, a Democratic Senator from Oklahoma, whose candidacy didn't last long). He gave a very impressive speech to what couldn't have been more than 25 or 30 people and later stayed a while to chat with me and the other club members. A very nice, thoughtful man. While we knew he was the Governor of Georgia, of course, he was at the time the longest of long shots for the presidency and hardly a household name in most of the country (he arrived at the college alone in a taxi). Who'd have guessed?
A couple of years later, former 1960's radical, but by then Wall Street banker Jerry Rubin arrived to give a club-sponsored speech. He too was an excellent speaker, easily handling a number of hecklers who accused him of being a sellout, and once again stayed around to shoot the breeze. He was witty and seemed to know everything about national and world affairs. I was very sorry several years ago when he died.

Wow, man, now you're my hero just because you talked and drank beer with Alice Cooper.  Insane I said in my first post that DiMaggio looked like he was going somewhere, so I didn't want to disturb (meet) him. Do you really think Alice Cooper remembers that moment with you? Probably not, he has to appease people like you all the time to keep up his PR.

I hit the jackpot at a casino in Nassau. Apparenly, there was a Pro/Am Golf tourney in town with sports stars. In the Casino, I ran into:

Micheal Jordan
Wayne Gretzky
Julius Irving
Emmett Smith
Dan Marino
and others (can't remember all of them).
Micheal had a blackjack table roped off and was playing with one other person and his guard standing by. Dr. J was extremely friendly.

The strangest meeting was in the bathroom of a Boston restaurant. A richly dressed man, who was slightly intoxicated introduced himself as Daniel Baldwin, the not-so-famous brother of Alec. He whipped out his credit cards to show me who he was. About 3 months later, I saw him on TV as one of the Miss America judges. It was definately him. He was very friendly (and short), and looked just like the rest of the Baldwins.

I've met Brit Spears, too. I was ramp agent for the sunday morning Swissair flight STR-ZRH, and she was on that flight. She had a concert in Stuttgart on saturday evening, and sunday morning she flew STR-ZRH and I think she connected to BCN, maybe it was MAD I don't know. I would have liked to ask her for an autograph, but of course there were her peaceless bodyguards, and then the captain shouted at me "Britney who? I don't know her. No time for autographs, I want to leave on-time!".

My bad man. That was a pretty shitty thing to say. I guess I just misunderstood/misread your first post. I really didn't mean for it to sound like I was being an ass, but I guess it really does, doesn't it. So anyway, please except my appologies.
BTW, your right. Alice Copper probably doesn't remember me, and I really never thought he would, except that when I saw him the second time at the roast, HE DID! But that was more than seven years ago, so I don't have very high hopes that he still does.
