I've Had Enough Of France

Mon Jan 14, 2002 5:22 am

I know, this is another "help i have problems!" thread, but I'm just going insane...

I dont know if most of you gathered, but I moved to Toulouse France, after 15 years of living in Los Angeles, California. My dad is french, and was tired of the U.S., and wanted to come back here, where he *claims* to be much happier. I was dragged here aswell, along with my mom and little bro.
Baisically, I've had it up to here with ANYTHING french. I go to a normal french school, which means no English, no saying American swear words, no talking about that funny part in American Pie 2, nothing....
I'm going nuts. I pretty much left my life in Los Angeles, my girlfriend of 2 years, all my very close friends, a great school that was like a 2nd family, and my whole family. I am slowly loosing contact with most of my friends from over there, because with the timezones i can almost never geta ahold of them by phone.
Also, the school system here is different, and it is much harder to become a pilot. You have to be a whiz in Math, a subject that i'm not too fond of.
Ontop of that we only have a 2 room apartment for now, which was supposedly temporary, but that we've had since our arrival in August. September 11 has just made me want to feel more American, while enduring anti-American remarks 24/7. I'm in a damn hole here, and I dont know how to get out.
I was thinking of moving in with my grandparents in Los Angeles, they are waiting with open arms, but leaving my bro and mom will be hard...I dont know what to do. My dad has NO intention of coming back, he loves france, and I cant blame him, its his country.
I however, aint a fan, and its getting very tough. Thank god for this computer, Linkin Park, and Airliners.net, where I can speak English...

 Sad help please

Here is what may work for you, Leftseat86...

If you get a chance, visit the United States for a few weeks. That will probably help you sort out your post-Sept. 11 emotions. You may also realize that America isn't that far away after all. I bet you'll feel a whole lot better when you'll return to France.

Take me, for instance: When I'm in Slovenia, I really miss the US, and when I'm in the US, I really miss Slovenia. I'll always feel that way, but I've discovered that reading the hometown paper on the Web is a great way to fight homesickness.

If time zones are a problem for you, can't you stay in touch with your friends via e-mail?

And look on the positive side of all this: How many Americans have the chance to live in Europe and perfect their knowledge of a foreign language? Think of all the advantages this will give you when you'll apply to your favorite college or your first big job. Many people would love to get a chance to broaden their horizons by living in a foreign country. You have that chance, so take advantage of it!

That comment was destined to Aviatista.

I already speak french with zero accent. People dont believe I'm American. I had to bring one dude a dollar bill so that he would believe me. I can write very well in french, better than some of my french classmates.
I'm just tired of this place. Its not for me. I will never MISS frence, because I like to visit, not to live.
-thanks for your opinion

Well what can I say... my parents are Czech but I was born in Malta and I've lived here almost all my life. My dad will be retiring in two years' time and going back to Brno along with my mum and I'll be going to university at that time but I'll have to go with them cos there's no way I can support myself here. Do I have to tell you how happy I am about it? I'm a proud Maltese citizen, I love Malta and I wanna stay here, not go back to the Czech Rep! I'll have to though...

Normally I stay out of the non-aviation forum, but...

Dude, as someone mentioned before, take advantage of your time abroad. It looks good on a resume, it's an incredible learning experience, and more importanly, think of all the stories you'll be able to tell when you try to pick up women!  Wink/being sarcastic

As an American, it disgusts me to see how narrow-minded many of us are. I only wish I could have experienced another culture like that when I was your age...

Well if you can't get over to the states soon you should hop over to England where we all LUV to speak english and the place is becoming more like the states everyear! Being half french yourself, you probably wouldn't want to come over here though!  Laugh out loud Or of course you could spend some of your Euro's on a McDonalds! Thats all I ate when I went to France with college!

Leftseat. Declare war on France. They will concede defeat to you without a shot fired, then you can do what you want with the country. Sound like a plan?

Hello,

I grew up (well until I was 11) between Switzerland and France (between the Swiss-French part of Switzerland near Geneva and about 10km away in neighbouring France) My dad being Irish, we spent nearly every holiday in Ireland before finally moving after my mum decided to leave Swissair in 1996.

At least I am/was pretty lucky. Already spoke fluent French and returned (and still return) to Switerland a few times an year where still on property.

However, it is still the hardest thing I ever had to do. I lost all but one or two of my Primary-school friends, people I grew up with, spent every day with for 5 years which I can't hide really hurts me. It is easy to say that you will keep in touch, much harder in pratise. You are 1000km away leading out own life, and they are leading there's.

I did have problems fitting in in Ireland, still kind of do I guess. My first school was a nightmare, after 1.5 years changed to the current school I am i which totally improved things (loads of foreigners like me) It is only after 2-3 years that I really felt adapted but still not really Irish, not even after 6 years, I am seriously considering going back to Switzerland for University next next.

My advice for you? I may not be right but if you hate it that much, look into going back? I am happy now, but I still wonder what if had gone back or did not leave at all.

Hope that helps. Do you have ICQ/AOL/MSN Messenger/Yahoo Messenger?

Movn to a new place can and is usually extremely traumatic especially when women are involved. BUt i see u're only 16.

i would suggest give it some time. Who knows, mebbe 2 years later, u'r dad will shift back to the US and then you'll be posting here about how the US sucks!

I am already FLUENT(PERFECT) French/English. I don't see why living in France for 5 years will do anything great. I like France, but only to visit, not to live. Its really boring.
School is really hard too, i hate it.

Go ahead and talk to your parents, tell them how you feel, that you want to live back in LA with your grandparents. Also mention the fact that you weren't thrilled with moving(if it is true) and that you want your old life back.

Good luck.

Maybe you need to change schools, it must be difficult moving countries, think of it as a life enhancing experience. Maybe you need to find a job where your English language skills would come in handy.
Good luck for the future, at least you got a computer and can talk to us on airliners.net

How old are you, according to your profile you are 16-20, so surely you can just say to your parents you want to go back to the US? Hell, five years in France is long enough for anyone! Do you have any relatives you could live with back home, that could be one option. If you don't want to be there, say so and say why to your parents.

Clovis--

Just reading this after getting back from vacation...

We all go through rough times when we'd rather be somewhere else, when we still have to adjust to things, etc.

If there is anything I have learned from my parents, it is the virtue of patience and perseverance, never to give up.

You've been in Toulouse only since the summer, n'est-ce pas? As much as it sucks, keep going through the motions, but find things to do that you like. Keep doing the things you like to do.

It's so much easier said than done, but give it time. 3 years before college back in the US compared to the rest of the number of years in your life is teeeeeny.

Besides, Toulouse is awesome, or not so much for you!?
Bonjour Chef!

Leftseat,

I think you'd better:

1) Try to find other foreigners and help them feel better. It will make feel yourself better.
2) Try to have true relations with French people. It seems you kinda refuse to have French real friends.
3) Be proud of where you come from but you don't have to show it all the time.
4) Try for a while to understand the French culture and way of living. You will probably love it if you manage.

If you do it, you will be a true double cultural world citizen. That's unvaluable.
