I Hate Rice Rockets!

Mon Jan 14, 2002 6:13 pm

After posting in the thread about "The Fast And The Furious" on how I hate rice rockets, I decided to start a thread about it. I want to see some rants about why you hate POS rice-rockets. I still don't understand why they're so popular, it's not like they're cheaper than domestics...unless by "cheaper" you're referring to the quality  Big thumbs up I'd rather drive a domestic mini-van than a ricer (and I hate mini-vans).

I don't like them either. I like a car where I can put my friends, my dog, my girl, a bunch of beer and have some space left. Big grin

Japanese cars lack of a soul is the main reason i don't fancy them very much. in that case italian cars are better. Italy is the mother of all cars (even though everything that's been made there isn't of very high quality *cough* early 90's Alfa romeo's) but they'r still cars with a soul. just my $0.02.

It is an Asian make of car that is a little bigger then a Power Wheels car for kids. On average, they have the equivalent to a modified 2-stroke Briggs & Stratton lawn-mower engine that can do 0-60 in a 28 minutes. But the owner will soup up the engine to drag-racing capabilities by putting extra-large exhaust pipes, tint, low-profile tires and rims, and lots of stickers on it. You can spot these cars tearing up the road by their unmistakable 'chirp' they leave at green-lights when the driver side-steps the clutch.

Achtung baby, I could not agree more. These Japanese cars that are suped up are really annoying. I'll take a Z06 Corvette or M5 any day of the week.

I have yet to see "The Fast and the Furious", but I think it's on pay per view later this month. I'll drop the 4 bucks to watch pretty much any car movie. And it should be good for a laugh or two (or a couple hundred). As far as rice rockets go, can't stand em. I cringe at the sound of bumblebees on the highway. The "stickers make me faster" mentality is what gets me. Now if a guy can really make his Honda fast, I'll give him a little respect. But I can count on one hand the number of "hot" imports that have out dragged me in my wife's Taurus. Bone-stock, with kids in the back seat. The only Japanese cars I would ever consider owning would be a Miata (I think I can fit a 5.0 in there), or that new Subaru WRX.

Rice rockets are dumb. If power's what you need, you can get a 310 HP Camaro for under $25,000. Japanese cars are good non-modified. Good, practical cars.

Some kids called my Toyota Camry a rice rocket because I added new rims to it and changed the windows around. I hit them right in the face.
I have the 2001 Toyota Camry V6 , and I added the tinted windows because I love how my car looks now, and the rims because it just flows.

Blue/silver tint windows, blue car, silver rims...
I like the car myself. I have never seen another camry like it. Plus I take care of it like no other.
Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten, Uptown, what now? Lets make it happen.

People watching too much "Initial D", I wonder. I personally don't like souped up cars. THe Jap sports cars that are powerful from the beginning are just fine, why an old not-souped up 300ZX can outrun a Porshe 968!

Yeah I use "ricers" too. I didn't want to put that in the thread title though because a lot of people might not know what I'm talking about.

My question is just where do these kids find those tires, I mean those P165/40R13" tires are hard too find, not to mention the after-market tubo kit for the 1.2 litre engines.

So this is where the term "ricey" comes from? My friend hooked up her honda and this guy told her it was "ricey". We were totally clueless.

And why are Hondas the car of choice for modifying instead of other cars? Is it because the engines and the car are easy to work with or something?

BH346, there's a lot of after-market support for Honda cars. Civics, Accord and Integra (yes, it's still Honda, IMO) have huge support groups. Yes, I agree that some of the sticker decorations are sickening, but some of the 'sleepers' on the road are quite nice. I have a friend of mine who spent $40,000 US+ on his Civic, and he's pretty pissed off 'cause he now realizes that he could have gotten a decent Bimmer for that money.

Personally, I don't really care anymore. If they want to look like idiots in their wannabe rides, so be it. Funny thing is that most of the rice-drivers didn't even pay for the car themselves. Most are spoiled kids with too-much-money to spare.

Btw, not all Japanese cars are bad. Lancer Evo, Skyline and RX8 are all quite impressive works for their respective markets.

Its not the power- they may have power to weight ratios similar (or even better than) a Camaro. But they get it all by spinning the engine fast; a civic Si gets its 160 hp at 6000 rpm, and its a real steap curve. But their main problem isn't power; its torque. They just don't have it, and just can't get decent ammounts of it out of those small engines. The reason my 1988 Oldsmobile could beat those things off the line with the same horsepower, but lugging around an extra ton of steele was torque. A Civic Si only has 106 lb-ft of torque, and thats way up at 4500 rpm, with steep drops on either side.

Honest to God, I once saw a rice rocket run the quarter-mile with his parking brake on and the back wheels locked ... it was definitely not fast or furious.

I know one Japanese car that is definitely NOT a riceboy car: the Nissan Skyline GT-R.

The nice thing is the next-generation Skyline GT-R is definitely headed towards the US market probably as a 2004 model in the Infiniti range. Imagine a very sporting version of the 4.5-liter V-8 from the current Infiniti Q45 in this new car with around 400 bhp in the US market car; that should give owners of 2001 and 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera owner pause.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

You guys are such muppets, and the little amount of so called 'trendy' stuff is absolutely halirous. C'mon thinking Garage music refers to people playing in the garage. Now you guys think rice rockets are refered to cars, however the refer to Japenese motorcycles.
I have had about enough of all this stupid stuff that goes on here, from 'Does this girl like me' to this type of rubbish, I am outta here!

Iain, shut up. Rice rocket was the term for motorcycles ten years ago. Times have changed.

Those boys make me laugh...lookin all tough in their stupid looking plastic cars. I seem them little boys at stop light revving their lawn mower engines trying to look cool in their knock off sunglasses and I literally have to pull over cuz I can't drive when i am laughing that hard.

Well most rice rockets would you believe cost about as much (if its made from a new car) as a BMW M3 which does 0-60 in 4.8 s and has a max speed of 155 (electronicly limited). Now on top of that it has about the same preformance but they have a more reliable engine, warrenty service (the first 3 yrs of preventive maintnece is included with the car) and its all in one bill, instead of having a stack credit card bills. Not only that Bimmers look cooler.

Notice this post is coming from a BMW owner and lacky (still under warrenty).
At worst, you screw up and die.

I can't stand them. I'm in highschool, and so many at my school have them. The Acura's and Honda's literally have there own parking lot. It's so funny because occasionally some people with race their "rice rockets". While the city bus passes them.

The damn thing sounds like my lawn mower!

Twotterwrench, aren't they funny? I really like the guys who drive with their seat all reclined. I pulled up next to some dork in a Camry with his seat all the way back. I put mine back and busted out laughing while he was looking at me. Then I had a LOT of trouble trying to drive when the light changed.

Sophie, I drive a minivan, so maybe I shouldn't talk...kidding...but I love it when they recline the seat all the way and then lean so far over it looks like they are trying to sit in the right seat. What makes it hilarious is that they think they are the shit and EVERYONE else in eyesight is laughing their asses off at these clowns. I am laughing right now just thinking about it.

Actuallly, I may have been bitten by the rice bug. The old Tracer wagon is getting kind of boring. What do you think, lowering, wide tires, dark tint, "draggin' wagon" across the windshield? But, being in Kansas, it would have to be a "wheat rocket", we don't grow rice here!

Don't forget a ridiculously loud exhaust, seat belt padding (for when you're racing you know)

Oh and find as many japanimation toys you can and stick them to your dash board and hang them from the rear-view mirror  Big thumbs up
