Changing History To Be Politically Correct.

Fri Jan 18, 2002 6:16 am

The NY Fire dept. has commissioned a statue to be erected as a memorial of Set. 11th. The statue will be based on a now-famous picture of three NYFD men raising the flag at ground zero.

The statue will have one white, one black, and one hispanic. This is not the way it was. The three men in the picture were white. An NYFD spokesman said that this was to reflect the fact that while the picture "happened" to capture three whites, the statue should reflect the multi-ethnic NYFD.

But this is also a lie - or if not a lie, at least a big exaguration. Blacks and Hispanics COMBINED make only 5% of the NYFD. Their part of the NYC population is of course much greater.

OK, so someone thought that they may be labeled as racist if they left the facts as they were (I wonder if the photographer caught any heat for his insensitivity). But who, I wonder, would complain about it? Would Jesse Jackson start a campaign to get the NYFD to acknowledge minority participation on an equal level, even though that was not the case? Perhaps we should wonder why so few minorities seem to want to join the Fire Department.

Your thoughts?

I think it's fine. It's capturing a "moment" as opposed to a specific "time".

Blacks and Hispanics COMBINED make only 5% of the NYFD.

But how about the NYPD and especially the PANYNJ.

Those groups also did their job on Sep. 11

Hasn't this already been discussed?

it's quite simple really, to many of the youth of today learn their history via hollywood and what they can see (books? what are they!).

History needs to be portrayed accurately.

What's the big deal?
It's interesting how some whites are angry about this. There are many Black and Hispanic heros that are ignored everyday.
Look at Jesus Christ.
Many non-whites should be angry that he was painted white!
I am sorry but it's hard to imagine someone coming from the Middle-East looking like Jim Morrison.

Back to topic.
It sounds as though some of you want this memorial to reflect Hollywood. Meaning only the heros are white and criminals are black and brown skin.

BTW, Hollywood is far from liberal.

You ever seen Dogma?

"Well for one thing, they changed a lot of things in the Bible. You sure don't hear about me, the 13th apostle. Why? Cause I'm black! And another thing, Jesus was black!"

ADG...

Not sure about where you live, but I raid the chain bookstores (Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc) every weekend and find them stacked with teenagers sprawled out all over the place. Granted many of them are zapping through the latest skateboard magazine, but every fluffy line they read makes the substance stuff all the easier.

In answer to the original post, bronze statues don't have races. They're not white, black, Hispanic or Samoan. They're bronze.

Anyone who looks at a statue of a hero and says "I can't relate to that cause he's not my color" is a racist. Do I think a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King is a waste of space because I'm not black? Ridiculous. Here was a hero who's quest for brotherhood is something everyone should emulate.

Keep the statue as it really happened. And when I look at it, I'll remember the only good part about a horrible day....how this country united regardless of color, politics or lifestyle, into one incredible soul.

Heavymetal,

The issue is that they'll look at the statue and think hey! look at what we did when veyr clearly they didn't.

A black man or a hispanic man could have raised the flag, but the fact is that for whatever reason they didn't. What would happen if three black men had raised the flag. I'd put money on the fact that the statue would be of three black men, but because these men are white it needs to be changed! That's pretty silly!

I don't have an issue with the race, its with the changing of history to suit policial agendas that irritates me.

It's about time that these PC people realised that within your borders you are all American regardless of what ethnic group you may belong to. 3 American men raised that flag, their likenesses should be on the statue.

As an ex New York Fireman from Brooklyn I'll tell you that this makes me sick. By portraying this statue to potray political correctness you are litterally inuslting the three firemmen. I would be happy if the artist made another scuplutre ofor the 12 black firefighters and the 2 black police officers killed in this cowardly attack. They shouldn't change the statue at all! I happen to have met a Firefighter from Ladder Compnay 3 who knows 2 of the guys. The one guy in the middle is the quiet one. When he heard about this all he did was shake his head in disappoinment. The guy on the left was a bit more vocal he said "So WTF does this mean!?! I'm not good enough to represent the fire department!?!" None of the members of the FDNY are reacting happily to this. By the way I'm Hindu and I think that it should accuratly potray the 3 firemen rasing up the flag like it was on that day. This is political correctness at it's worst!

I think it makes absolutely no difference. The point of this sculpture is to potray the tragic events of Sept 11th and so we do not forget the people who died, or helped out. The color of the people is irrelevant on the meaning of the art.

Right - it's irrelevant. So why lie about it?

Why not make the sculture faceless. Sort of like and unknown solider sort of thing. This will eensure that ALL the firefighters are represented.

A340, that's absolutely right.

This statue is meant to commemorate the indescribable behaviour of all the members of the NYFD.

The photo of the three firemen raising the flag is of course highly emotional, and it should have been treated with the needed RESPECT: it has fixed for eternity one precise moment in that absolute inferno.
I personnally consider this photo to be "untouchable", it should have been very accurately reproduced, without any change.

The raising of the flag on "Ground Zero" is an illustration of the greatness of all the heroes of the NYFD who rushed into the burning towers to provide help and who were annihilated in action.
It is therefore shocking to alter it in order to artificially achieve a piece of highly out-of-place "political correctness".

Nor political correctness, neither any other consideration should have interfered in that monument.

if the figrues are bronze then how is any one going to know what race the staus represent, is there going to be a plaque stating an 'hispanic man' etc etc?

if there is then this is an example of pc distorting history.

I dont see why enthic minorities would be upset about a statue dispicting three white men, as far as i am concerned people are new yorkers first.
It is amazing what can be accomplised when nobody takes the credit

I Agree. sorry, but it was three whites, not one of each that did it. It is amazing in school how much history gets revised to be Politically correct.
