Are These CD Sayings True Or False?

Fri Jan 18, 2002 6:19 am

1. Leaving a CD in the CD player for a long time will mess it up the CD.

2. Changing tracks while the music is still playing on a track (I.E. Not pausing it beforehand) will mess up the CD.

I'd say "false" to both since there is no physical contact between the "reader head" (for lack of a better term) and the CD.

I agree with Rapo, especially on #2. The only way I could see how #1 is possible is if the heat in the unit causes the CD to gradually warp or something like that.

#1: Pretty improbable, unless you´ve got your player baking in direct sunlight. When the CD´s in the player, it is held almost identically as in the jewel box lying horizontally. No big deal.

#2: Definitely nonsense. The low-level data on the CD doesn´t even know where the breaks between the titles are. And pickup is completely without touch. Don´t worry.

Answer to #1: False. Unless you leave the CD player on another unit that tends to get hot. The CD player should always be on a shelf by itself. You don't think that you have to put away all one hundred CD's in a hundred disk changer every time you shut it off do you?

Answer to #2: Absolutly false! The only thing that might cause damage is shutting the device off while it is playing. That could damage the unit by screwing with the drivers that move the laser.

Hope this helps,

In case this hasn't really been cleared up yet... they're both "digital" legends.
