Egypt, Israel, Or Australia And New Zealand

Wed Jan 23, 2002 10:43 am

Hello,
Nice topic, right? Anyway, before I graduate highschool, I want to go to another foreign destination... not Europe. A "distant land" as the tour company calls it. Anyway, here is what I broke it down to:

Australia and New Zealand - 15 days, 12 overnight stays
- roundtrip airfare from NYC
- flights from AKL - BNE
- Includes Auckland, Rotorua, Sydney, Great
Barrier Reef, Brisbane, etc.
Pluses: Australia and New Zealand! Get to do the LAX-SYD route!
Minuses: May go there in college, costs $2,200 (bad right before I go to college)

Israel - 9 days, 7 overnight days (this is a good amount of time)
- roundtrip airfare from NYC
- Tel Aviv, Dead Sea, Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, etc.
Pluses: cheapest tour ($1400) sounds very interesting
Minuses: Israel is currently under travel advisory by US Department of State (unsafe)

Egypt - 10 days, 8 overnight stays
- roundtrip airfare to CAI from NYC
- flights from CAI to either Aswan, or Luxor
- train from Aswan, or Luxor to Cairo
- 4 day cruise of Nile River
Pluses: not to badly priced ($1600), very historical, includes overnight train ride (sounds fun), includes inter-Egypt flight (always up for an adventure), Nile cruise!
Minuses: during the nile cruise, we stay in "cabins", anyone want to explain more about these (if you have ever stayed in one in Egypt?).
Looking foward to your responses.

Definitely go for Egypt. Australia is also a good choice, but sounds expensive. I have always wanted to go to Africa, and Egypt sounds fantastic. By all means, go if you can!

I've been to all of the places you've mentioned, but at different times in my life. I have most recently been to Australia and New Zealand, and I cannot find enough good things to say about these countries and their people. I went with my fiancée and it was more of a romantic trip than a cultural adventure. Yeah, we were adventurous - we went skiing, 4-wheeling, jet boating, and white water rafting in Queenstown. We also went on bush walks in the Blue Mountains. We had an incredible time and stayed in Bed and Breakfasts. However, for such a long flight you don't really feel how far away you are because everyone speaks English and their system and infrastructure is similar to Britain and the U.S. In other words, you don’t feel as though you are in a far, exotic land (unless you really travel to rural areas, which you probably won’t do).

Israel and Egypt are another type of trip all together, and it’s fun if you visit the countries together – it gives you a feel for the region. I went as a student, therefore my experiences were different. If you can’t go to both countries, I would say go to Israel. It’s much easier to get around and there are a lot of things to do for young people. The language and cultural challenges you will face in Israel or Egypt will have a greater effect on you, as these countries are a little more difficult to get around than typical European countries (especially Egypt). The history is overwhelming, and that would be the main reason to go.

The people of Australia and New Zealand are genuinely friendly, nice, and very proud of their countries. Israelis and Egyptians are extremely hospitable – if you meet local Israelis they will invite you into their homes and treat you like family. It’s nice to know somebody who knows somebody there before you go – they’ll treat you like family if you call them. I don’t know as much about Egyptians. If you go with a group you’ll be safe – they keep you away from trouble spots.

All of these destinations are fantastic – I guess you just have to decide what type of experience you want and what you intend to get out of it. I hope I didn’t write too much – I was just so excited to see a topic I could write about! Hope I helped…Jetsetter.

Were you looking at a company called Contiki?

Don't you have to be 18?

I got a nasty case of dystentery in Egypt. Otherwise, I would suggest going to Israel and/or Egypt.

Mls515, No, this isn't Contiki. But yes, for Contiki you have to be 18 or older.
I have traveled with this tour company before to Italy back in 2000, when I was only 13!!! Such a great experience. The group i traveled with last time is going to Greece in only a few weeks. I really wanted to go (Greece looks great), but my parents wouldn't let me due to lack of money. But I still get to go to Florida instead.

P.S.- I was accepted to go to Australia with People to People, but not for $5,000!
P.S.S.- Some words of wisdom. If you ever have the chance to go to another country while you are in highschool... go! You make so many friends with people in your group, you get to see so much, and there is nothing better than being in Europe, or on your way to the airport, while all of your friends are still in school.

I would go to Australia/New Zealand, because I adore huge landscapes as well as...kangaroos and koalas!!

I dream to go there; the nature is spectacular, and already for the Great coral reef it would be worth flying 30 hrs.

These trips are so different! It really depends on WHAT you're looking for.

For your next big trip: If you want something REALLY exotic, consider traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railroad (from Moscow to Beijing via Irkutsk and Mongolia).

It's an unforgettable experience!

This site has all the info you'll need for the trip.

Here is my suggestion...do both....fly from the states to Cairo on SU(EgyptAir), have some time there....then onto SYD via Asia also on SU....visit NSW,QLD & the GBR then jump the ditch to NZ on NZ,QF,PH,AR or TG and tour the country before going back to the states on QF,NZ or UA......I'm sure this could be bought as a RTW airfare...
Flown to 120 Airports in 44 Countries on 73 Operators. Visited 55 Countries and counting. Wanderlust is like Syphilis, once you have the itch it's too late for treatment.

P.S.S.S.- Also go to Europe with a group tour when you are in college/university. You get all the benefits that you mentioned above, plus you will go out drinking heavily with your group. And who knows how things might go with the ladies on your tour.....
