Geography Buffs: Where Is Slovenia?

Sun Jan 27, 2002 8:36 am

I noticed that most of you had no difficulty locating Malta in another thread. But I'm willing to bet that even our geography buffs will have difficulty answering some of these questions about Slovenia, my place of birth. How many of them can you answer without looking at any maps or books?

If you don't know the answer, you can always guess!

Some General Questions:

1. What is the country's capital?

2. What is the country's second largest city?

3. Slovenia has a coastline of under 40 miles//50 km. What sea is the coastline on?

4. Name Slovenia's four neighboring countries.

5. What major European mountain range extends partially into Slovenia (in its northwestern part)?

6. What is Slovenia's main official language?

7. What is the country's major religion?

Some History Questions:

8. When did Slovenia become independent?

9. ...From what country?

10. What country was Slovenia a part of before 1918?

Some Aviation Questions:

11. What is the name of the country's main airport?

12. What is the name of the country's major airline?

Some Sports Questions:

13. Slovenia recently qualified for a major international sporting competition. Name it.

14. What "Alpine" recreational activity is frequently described as the country's national sport?

And finally...

15. Which two world leaders held their (first-ever) summit in Slovenia last year?

Is anyone brave enough to tackle all 15 questions?

Slovenia??? ...Never heard of it.

Do you mean Siciliy? ...Slovakia? ...Syria? ...Syracuse? ...St. Louis? ...Soho?

I think you're making this up. If I recall correctly, I think this "Slovenia" place was a fictional planet on the 1960s TV series, "Land of the Giants."

 Laugh out loud

Well done, everybody! I certainly didn't expect you to come up with all the answers so quickly. Do you guys know all countries this well?

Just some notes:

The correct answer of question 5 is the Alps, or the Eastern Alps. The range can be further divided into the following: the Julian Alps, the Karawanken, and the Steiner (Kamnisko-Savinjske) Alps. The Dinaric Alps are something different: they extend further south into Croatia and Bosnia, and are generally not considered to be a part of "the (Central European) Alps."

Yyz717 was right: Slovenia was a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918, when Yugoslavia (originally called the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes) was formed. The country became independent in 1991, when Yugoslavia collapsed.

Even though they came up with different answers, both ILS and Greenjet got Question 11 right: The airport is known both as Aerodrom Ljubljana (officially) and as Brnik (that's what most Slovenes call it; it's named after a small village next to it).

I was thinking of the Soccer World Cup when I wrote Question 13, but ILS is also right.

LOL!  Smile You'd be surprised how many people actually say things like that!

My conversations about Slovenia usually go like this:

They: That's an unusual accent. Where are you originally from?

Me: Slovenia.

They: Sweden?

Me: No. Slow-Vee-Nee-Ah

They: What country is that in?

Me: It IS a country.

They: Never heard of it. Was it one half of Czechoslovakia?

Me: No, you are thinking of Slovakia; Slovenia used to be a part of Yugoslavia.

They: Oh, so how did you survive the war?

Me: Actually, Slovenia wasn't really much affected by the conflicts in Croatia, Bosnia, and Kosovo.

They: Since Saloonia is one of those Soviet republics, you speak Russian there, right?

And so on...

Even prestigious newspapers have confused Slovenia and Slovakia.

Slovenia is a very coolplace to visit. I had a friend who lived in Koper--we went touring in his Renault IV. Piran probably my favorite beach town. Llubjana is a great place to chill and watch the "birds." Skocjan Caverns were absolutely awesome.

Plan to go back this summer on my honeymoon.

PHX-LJU,

I have almost the same problem. Some people mistake Austria (my home country) for Australia...

Slovenia is probably the number one country on my "places to visit" list right now. I've already done my research on the country, but I suppose Slovenia might be considered an obscure country to a lot of people.

The questions all have been answered, so I´ll just throw in the old German names of Ljubljana and Maribor: Laibach and Marburg. I was in Carinthia in 1991, we had actually planned to drive through the Karawankentunnel into Slovenia/Yugoslavia, but that was exactly when the troubles started, so we decided not to.
A year later I flew Adria twice, but without ever touching actual Slovenian soil - so technically I was in Slovenia, that little region called S5-AAA  Big grin, but I´d still like to visit the place "in reality".

PHX-LJU, I have a similar proble with my country's name:

They: Where are you from?
Me: Poland
They: Holland?
Me: No, Po-land
They: ???
Me: Poland, Polonia
They: Oh yes, I've heard about it. Where is it?
Me: Between Germany and Russia (I know that's not exactly true...)
They: You've got a very cold climate there like in Siberia...

and so on...
