Kansas City MKC Or MCI

Fri Feb 01, 2002 6:43 am

What's up with this? Is the commercial air port in Kansas City, MO coded as MKC or MCI? US Airways seems to think it is both! Can someone tell me what the story is?

MKC is the small downtown airport with no or almost no scheduled service.

MCI is the airport 30 miles north of downtown with AA, UA, SW, NJ etc...

Was TWA started at MCI or MKC?

I think MKC. Wasn't MCI built in the 70s?

Kansas City International Airport is also known as KCI along with MCI.

TWA was started in California, not Kansas City, but Kansas City was a significant base for them since the early days. They had a major maintenance base at MKC, which was prone to flooding (MKC is right on the Missouri River). After a major flood in the late 50's or early 60's (can't remember the exact date), TWA and the City of Kansas City worked together towards planning and building a new airport and maintenance facility several miles northwest of the city (MCI). AA has taken over the maintenance base at MCI, and is closing TWA's administrative center, which is just east of their maintenance base. At its height, TWA employed 4000 people in KC.
