My Life Is Going Down The Drain

Thu Feb 07, 2002 11:51 pm

I don't have much time to go into detail, but my life is going to hell.

-My grades are terrible (85, 85, 97, 71, 90, and 70).

-My home life sucks.

-I am sick of my daily routine.

-I told my parents that I want to make a difference in the world and join the armed forces when I turn 18. She got really mad at me and told me that no idiot in the air force makes a difference. What bullshit.

-Me and my girlfriend broke up.

-I have an appointment with the principal because I said shit during class.

-My life is meaningless at this time. I don't know what I am going to do.

Sorry to hear that. But I think that we all go through the "blues" at one time or another.

But in all honesty, it looks like "problems" 1, 2, and 6 are self inflicted. So no sympathy from me there.

What about your home life? Why does it suck? Are you being "grounded" because of your bad grades? Are your parents trying to get you to study harder? is that your interpretation of home life "sucking"?

As for "making a difference", ahh yes.....young innocent idealism.

Enjoy it while you can.

It is only the one person in a billion that ever make any real difference. The other 999,999,999 of us will live and die and no one will give a rats ass. Don't mean to wax pessimistic or anything. Just being realistic. You will find this out more clearly by the time you are 25. Your odds of changing the world for the better are not good. Especially by going into the AF. What do you hope to do? Pull the lever on the next Hiroshima?

Why did you and your GF break up?

If you are under 18, then chances are, it never had any chance of success anyway. It's part of growing up.

tell us in a little more detail why life is "meaningless".

Sounds to me like life hasn't even begun for you yet.

And I am a burned out, 28 year old bitter person telling you that. If you are poised to graduate, live in a good home, and have caring parents, you are in way better shape than you think.

Hey, cheer up!

1. Your grades aren't terrible...but I know how you feel. Last year, I got a 71 on my Chemistry 3rd quarter grade-the first time ever I got below an 80 on my report card. Furthermore, I needed a 93.5 GPA to stay in National Honor Society- mine was a 93.45 (!) because of Chemistry. Luckily, I begged my German teacher for one more point, which bumped it to a 93.5001  Smile But while I was pulling out my hair and crying for about 2 days straight, two years, I'm still here and I'm living  Smile Don't focus on the 71 and 70, focus on your 97 and your 90 and even, yes, your 85s... in NY State, and 85 is considered mastery level, and that's a B, B+, so don't freak out!

2. I'm sorry that your home life sucks, I can't help you out here too much cause I don't know what's going on in your home life.

3. Spice up your daily routine- join some after school clubs and drop the things you're bored of. Trust me, they make a world of difference, you'll be so busy and you'll enjoy doing what you're doing.

4. It sucks when your parents don't want you to be what you want to be (My mom says I can't be a pilot,VERY afraid of planes) But you still have time! When you go to college, and you're not happy with what you're doing, join the armed forces, by then you'll be 18 and your mom can't have much say in what you want to persue. For now, grin and bear it, I know it's hard, but that's what you gotta do.  Smile

5. I'm sorry about the girlfriend thing, but I've been there (Guy broke up with me after a week, and after we had a make out session, he got what he wanted and decided he didn't want me anymore- low self esteem in that period!) and I can assure you, the pain will ease. Sooner or later you'll have another girlfriend or the same girlfriend, but you'll enjoy single life while you have it.  Smile

6. I'm sorry your school is so strict like that... but again, you gotta grin and bear it, 'fess up, and let by gones be bygones. I'm 99% sure a college won't refuse you because you said "shit" in class.  Smile

7. Don't think your life is meaningless, it's just in a bad rut right now, but don't give up, get yourself out of it, and go to the road to better times. The only place you can go from here is up, so keep your chin up and stay strong.  Smile

Yeah, I have alot of those problems. My grades have gone down from A*-A all the way to C-D, and I know that I am better than that, but the truth is, I've just stopped learning. I can listen to a teacher attentively, and still not hear a word they say, I don't know how the hell I do it, if they say a sentance and ask me to repeat it, I just couldn't do it!

They only way I get through it is aviation and travel, and even that is wearing a bit thin nowadays!

If you're sick of your daily routine...change it! Develop a new interest of some kind, hang out with different people, whatever it takes.

If your home life sucks, then make plans to get away from home. Getting better grades in school will help you get into a better college or university--away from home! I suspect that going to college would provide you with a lot more freedom than joining the armed forces.

If you want to make a difference, why wait until your 18. You can do some sort of volunteer work now. Pick something that will give you a sense of personal satisfaction.

I don't have any suggestions about the girl problem except to try to get over her. I know it's easier said than done, but it can be done. There are other fish in the sea...

Everything will probably work out. Be patient--but also take active measures to make yourself happier.

And don't say "shit" in class. Duh.

OK, now I will try to go into a little more detail.

I wake up everyday at the same time, eat breakfast, take a shower, go to school, go to baseball practice, come home, eat dinner, do homework, and go to bed. That order all day everyday. I am sick of it and I need it to change. I need to have more variety or something. Baseball helps some because I worked my ass off and made the team.

I used to get awesome grades, but now I feel like what we are learning in school will never pay off in life, so I just tune out during class and try to reteach the material to myself while studying.

My dad is out of town 5 days a week so it is just my mom and my sister at my house. My life revolves around my perfect sister and me and my mom fight a lot. She hates airplanes and I don't ever talk about them to her and when she sees me on airliners.net she takes away the computer cord.

To Be Continued.

Dont you travel? You live in the US, so there must be lot's of places where you can go and have fun, or why dont you go and rent some of your favourite movies, or you can go to your local airport and do some spotting. Thats what i do if i get bored.

Just a few ideas

Oh, for crissakes man!!! Life doesn't start until AFTER high-school. This is just a test for you for when you run into real problems while raising a family, paying a mortgage and holding a career. Set goals for yourself on where you want to be 5 & 10 years after graduation. Start by following hobbies like aviation. See what it takes to get in the industry, then research the path to get there. You can always change it and something better might slap you in the face. But at least create a path. I did this with sports-journalism, but ended up an advertising exec. Once you do that, then look at your list and determine which of these issues could really compromise your goals. I only see one. Your grades. But I don't see any flunking, so you can nip that problem in the bud. Focus on that and screw the rest. Just knowing your goals are not in jeopardy which ease your mind a little. It will help you sort out the big-stuff from the small-stuff. And we all know we're not supposed to sweat the small stuff, and that is what you are doing. You will have a good future if you prioritize problems.

Let me attempt to put it into perspective:

-My grades are terrible (85, 85, 97, 71, 90, and 70).

Really not all that tragic. Focus on fixing the 70s. If there's time raise the bar on the rest. Grades ARE a big deal.

-My home life sucks.

Your current home life has no bearing on your future. You have very little control over your current home-life anyway. Realize this. Realize that it will be over soon and focus on shaping your future home-life as it will be a result of how successful you mean your career goals.

-I am sick of my daily routine.

Daily routines suck indeed, but they are necessary. You will have a routine all your life. You can't get rid of it, but, you can make it more pleasurable. Learn to take the edge off of it with simple things you can look forward to. Me? Weekly bowling night and monthly poker parties with the boys. Simple, stupid, but it keeps my sanity. They are part of my routine, but they are interchangable and pleasureable. So make it things you can SCHEDULE, so you actually DO IT and so you have something to look forward most of the time. Then do yourself a favor and throw in some spontanious activities. You really have to do this or you'll go out of your mind. Routines are a drag, but they also indicate stability.

-I told my parents that I want to make a difference in the world and join the armed forces when I turn 18. She got really mad at me and told me that no idiot in the air force makes a difference. What bullshit.

Really a non-issue. Don't get depressed just because your mom overreacted. Maybe you blind-sided her. Give her another chance, but prepare her and explain your objective of the conversation. You want guidance and opinion, not permission. Maybe the dialog would improve. If not, look elsewhere if you think you really need it.

-Me and my girlfriend broke up.

Another non-issue. You weren't going to marry her anyway. You will meet your wife soon enough. In fact, have as many girlfriends as you can. When you do meet your wife, you can't have any anymore.

-I have an appointment with the principal because I said shit during class.

Another non-issue. Who hasn't been to the big-dog's office? Unless the law gets involved, this means nothing whatsoever.

-My life is meaningless at this time. I don't know what I am going to do.

It's not meaningless, its undefined. But now is the only time you will get away with that. So its OK. Set some vague goals to add definition. Hell, make your goal to set some goals by the middle of your senior year. By simply having a plan, you'll see what little impact a lot of this stuff has on your future.

ILS,
I felt similarly many years ago in high school. Same home/grades/girlfriend/goals/etc. issues. A turning point for me was first year in college as I was pledging a fraternity. Each fraternity has a philanthropy, a charity, that it raises money for. At mine, it was a home for retarded children. Didn't know what to expect, but when I got there, we went from ward to ward, giving presents and singing carols for the patients. In each ward, their handicaps became more profound. In the last one we went to, we didn't even see the worst wards, they were basically twisted kids that lived their lives in a ball on a beanbag chair. We could barely sing carols with the lumps in our throats. I remember one of them looking up from the beanbag and "singing" along as best he could; he didn't make words but it was kind of a long moan that noticably approximated Jingle Bells. He would live in such a limited world, but he was happy anyway. That was a huge turning point in my life and it has stayed with me in the following 18 years. Prior to that I was suicidal, after that, I could never be.
My point, ILS, is that the world exists to us as we see it. Our reality, though, doesn't often mirror the real world. When things are going bad for you, you don't see how it can be worse and you can't see how it can get better either. What I saw that day is that, yes, the world could be a lot worse, as it is for many. But making it better is up to each of us. That pathetic wretch in that chair allowed himself a little joy. And my woe-is-me complex dissolved in a hurry when confronted with people with real challenges. Not just that boy, but the rest of those patients, as well as as their parents and the workers at the home, would probably love to change places with me. I saw the world and my life as horrible and without hope, but they might see it as carefree and full of opportunity and hope. I never thought of wasting my chance at life again. Yes, the world is tough, tragedies occur, and you will have sad days. But it is very important to keep your PERSPECTIVE on your situation.
ILS, I'm not saying that your problems are small or irrelevent, they are not. But you hold the key to make the changes. Routines can be broken. Grades can improve. Attitudes and outlooks can be changed. And, very importantly, if this persists or you feel desperate, SEEK HELP! I wish I had back then. I have also been treated for depression with Zoloft and found it to be very effective in getting out from under the cloud.
Best of luck, ILS, It does get better.

Jim

Great post 4holer...and so true. We could all use an experience like this to put life into perspective.

ILS...don't think you can't make a difference? Matt D's dead wrong if you ask me. For example....say you're 16. There are a few 12 to 13 year old guys around who may not have a father or older brother in the house. A kid like that would die to have a 16 year old who would play baseball with him...someone he could look up to. You don't think that's making a difference? It would make the world of difference to that kid and trust me...when you reach out to people like that and directly effect their lives...it makes you feel a whole lot better about yourself. Give it a try....

Feel free to email me if you want chat some more.

Hey, its ok, your life is not bad. A lot of kids in America wished they had a family life, wished they had a girlfriend, wished they got 70s. Like the other people said, the grades, just work a little harder, the mom thing, just try to see where shes coming from, I mean she probably thinks that if you join the Air Force that you will end up dying. Saying shit, thats nothing, just tell him/her that you were having a bad day, they can't expel you for a slip of the tongue. Anyway, I just started high school this year, and I thought my life had gone to hell. I went to a new school wtih no one that I knew, but it worked out. I slacked off, but then I realized that if I wanted to do something with my life that I should try a little, I still don't care about school, but at least I try.

its all gonna just fall into place and then you will be really happy.  Smile Believe me, my mom used to be the biggest ***** in the world, but then I realized it was because she loved me, even though she yelled sometimes. So anyway, just relax, I can't give very much advice about it, 'cept what I have already wrote, but from what I understand from the others here, that its a phase, which I still have to go through too BTW.

Dont get mad over yourself over items number 1 because they are all passing grades, you are doing much better than I am, #5 wasn't your fault, if I heard your other post correctly. Don't think bad like this, think positive. You have plenty of oppurtunities for grades, one grading period won't do much harm.

I am truly very sorry to hear about this, ILS.  Sad

Hey, you sound like me a few months ago. Shit happens. With the grades, Nothing bad about the A's and B's, but try to pull up those C's. If you think you're in a bad situation with grades, at the school I go to, you need a 4.5 GPA to be in the top 10% of your class. Girlfriends at this age don't last too long, so don't get to down about that. Yes, It's tough to recover, but just give it some time. Things will get better. BTW, just out of curiosity, what school do you go to?

Yeah that's bad for you But here are some tips for all of your problems.

-My grades are terrible (85, 85, 97, 71, 90, and 70).

You can study a little bit more but sometimes you might need to use some of what you learn in your life sooner or later. I am doing good except in one class where the teacher doesn't to like everyone else. He does everything his way like he would make us write some stuff in our notebooks and turn in a sheet of questions we have every month. There is some more stuff but I don't want to tell a lot.

-I am sick of my daily routine.

You can allways join some club or sport at school. I am in two and they are kinda cool and fun Photography is something I like to do even though it's for school stuff instead of planes but I can always go out to the airport and take pictures. And the computer club is cool though. We started learning how to use flash and it was cool and funny. I made two short cartoons and they sucked but it was funny and cool.

-My home life sucks.

If you have friends at school or in your neighborhood you can allways hang out with them or find some new ones. You might need some time to yourself too for a few.

-I told my parents that I want to make a difference in the world and join the armed forces when I turn 18. She got really mad at me and told me that no idiot in the air force makes a difference. What bullshit.

Sheesh! your mom must be wierd. If this is want you want to do you can always go for it. Besides you can always get money for college and do something like avaition mechanics or something else. When I told my older cousin about what I wanted to do he said that why don't I do something else besides that like law? I told him that this is what I wanted to do and I really like this as a future ocupation.

-Me and my girlfriend broke up.

It's not the end of the world! You can always find another one. That has happened to me but I didn't cry about it I can always find another one and I did and you can too.

-I have an appointment with the principal because I said shit during class.

It's ok It might be nothing serious. I have a U.S. history teacher that says shit all the time and other crappy words and some of the other kids do it in his class and he doesn't care. Sometimes some of the other teachers do it but the ladies and the other ones that aren't in any club or coach anything will get at you if you do it.
I had to go down there once but it was something grearding something on my record that wasn't right and some other stuff.

-My life is meaningless at this time. I don't know what I am going to do.

just keep your head up and if you need to get help. I don't like my life either but I like what I do. Try telling that to some of my other classmates they act like asses and one day they will look at it and laugh at it and say "I used to do that?" and just say that they were just an ass back then. I know how it is with your life but you need some time to yourself. Go see a movie or go someplace that you will like or just go to the airport and spot planes. It's your life do it right!

Ugh, I feel like im back in High school... dont make it out to be everybody else's fault except yours that your "life is going down the drain". Alot of those problems you can change on your own, because you have brought it upon yourself. Everything you listed that is going bad in your life isnt that drastic to say your life is going down the drain. I am sure probably 95% of the people on here have gone through that kind of crap, or going to deal with that crap in their life. The ones that have, such as I... well I did something about it. Bad grades... i busted my ass. bad home life... i talked it out with parents, a break up... I moved on, daily routine... I changed mine. Bottom line is all of your problems can be worked with. its up to you to be motivated to correct what is wrong in your life. not sit on airliners.net and tell a sob story. remember its up to you if you want your life to turn around!

By the way, in years to come you will laugh about the 'shit' incident over beers with friends, the girlfriend who hurt you will be chain smoking at the end of the bar trying to pick up the married out of work fry chef, and you will thank God you quit the Air Force because your independent nature and ability to do it your way since your Dad wasn't around drove you nuts in the military.
ILS, you will be kicking ass five years from now. Look forward to it and work to make it happen.

I don't have much time to go into detail, but my life is going to hell.

-My grades are terrible (85, 85, 97, 71, 90, and 70).

Im sorry man, I have no idea how that grading system works, but i know you are really intellegent, in Australia we use A10-E1 A=highest of course and 10 the highest.

-My home life sucks.
Im sorry ILS i wouldnt know anything about brother and sister stuff i was the only child, sorry.
Have you ever thought of staying at one of your friends for a little while? People just dont understand other ppls passion for unusual things, most australian ppl expect you to just to love rugby union, then youre on the good side of them. Im not giving a good example, but every time i tell ppl (even when i told my parents) i want to see my future designing airline interiors and couture, they look at me as if i spat in their face, so i never tell anyone else, they think its embarrassing, none of my other friends know i like that kind of stuff, they find it strange enough for me liking to paint.

-I am sick of my daily routine.
Well me too you know the same thing as you said,
stumble out of bed, breakfast, take a shower, have a fag, go to work, spend hours on boring work sent home, cant be stuffed making dinner-too tired, and crash on the bed still with your work clothes on.
But all i can suggest is just stick with your friends they make the school days seem soo much more enjoyable, organise a big get together with your mates on the w/e or something you would look foward to doing.

-I told my parents that I want to make a difference in the world and join the armed forces when I turn 18. She got really mad at me and told me that no idiot in the air force makes a difference. What bullshit.

Your mom is wrong as far as i know,no offence to your parents of course, the armed forces dont take in any idiots no more, they only take smart and physically fit ppl now and from all that i have read on you, i believe you would be a great asset to the U.S Armed Forces.
Dont give a rats ass about what you dont want to do, you know what is right for you.

-Me and my girlfriend broke up.

Well no matter how rude it looks, its just a part of life sorry. But you never deserved what she did to you, you loved and really cared for her and she dumped you in a very bad manner. I hope you will eventually come across some nicer girl which will treat you really lovingly.

-I have an appointment with the principal because I said shit during class.

Tell me what made you say "shit"? Jeez an appoinment with the headmaster just for saying shit that school takes trivial far too seriously, that really annoys me, have you told your folks how rediculous this situation is?

-My life is meaningless at this time. I don't know what I am going to do.
Its going to be ok, youre life is far from meaningless, youre very smart, youre a nice preson, youre going to be sucessful in life, there are soo many ppl who care for you, your folks, your family, your friends and all those good ppl on a.net and ILS you are making a difference to ppls lives you really are! Big grin
Well anyways ILS i wish things will get so much better for you, ok!  Crying

Dear ILS,
I am really very sorry indeed you are so sad at this time, but as another user on this website said, we all go through bad times in our lives, and we all have our blues.I know because I have been there time and time again.
I suggest you talk to someone about it.If you have a friend then that is good, alternatively you could try a psychologist or a cousellor or something like that. They always have people like that at school dont they ?
Your grades, contrary to what you say are excellent.Having just finished university myself, I can attest to the fact that sometimes just passing an exam can be an ordeal in it's own right, and sometimes you should be grateful just to get from one year to the next.
If you don't like living with your parents, then try to move out and get an apartment of your own.I dont know how old you are, but I am sure a lot of young people in your age group have places of their own.
I can understand you wanting to make a difference in the world, but it is not absolutely necessary to be with the airforce, you could try to change the world in different ways.Becoming a journalist and exposing injustice, for a change. Then again, if you are really keen on the airforce, go for it and let no-one stop you.
The most important thing in the world is not to lose hope for a better tomorrow.I am sure you will see better days in the future.
God Bless
Best Wishes

btw. are those grades percentages? If so, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. I used to get 90%+ in most tests, but now I rarely get about 65-70%, even in my favourite subjects, and those grades don't seem so bad!!!

Really, everything comes at you at once, and it makes you feel like shit, you really just need to dust yourself off and get back on your feet, it'll be alright in the end!!!

btw. for anyone saying that you need to do something to get out of this position, I think he knows that, and you should know how hard it is to get out of it, you simply do not want to do anything, at all. It sucks, it happens to me all the time!!!

Regards

Dan

hahaha 4holer, isn't that always the way it is??? It seems SO awful what you go through, and then you look back and realize how glad you are that things turned out the way they did. I dated a guy who blew me off for another girl. At first I felt inadequate because she went to an ivy league school and was older than myself, etc. It turns out she was developing a crack habit and totalled his BMW. Then he bought another car and she got that one stolen. He had issues of his own. I am SOOO glad not to be with him or anyone else I've cried over for that matter. Sometimes you've just got to trust fate!
