Happy 2002 Mardi Gras Everyone!

Fri Feb 08, 2002 7:48 am

Well guys, it's that time of year again in Sydney. The 2002 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras is launched tonight from the steps of the world famous Sydney Opera House.

Crowds and International / Interstate tourists are expected to be down this year due to the Sydney Gay Games later this year. I'm sure the locals will come out in support as always.

It promises to be an exciting month as always culminating with the big parade and after party on March the second.

So Happy Mardi Gras to everyone! If your in Sydney or are travelling from Interstate or Abroad make sure you check out some of the activities / parties / fair day / film festival / and other celebrations. There is something for everyone - gay / straight or whatever.

Cheers!

Brent,

Going to the opening this evening, fair day, shop yourself stupid, *maybe* the pool party and going to see one of the comics that is out.

Parade is too busy and the after party to drugged out to be any fun for someone who only drinks.

Fair day is my favourite as I always end up running into people I have not seen for years as I'm not particularly into the scene so to speak.

It's turned out to be a beautiful day today, let's hope the weather holds out for this evening.

Cheers,

mb

Won't be able to make the party year, but I'll definitely be there in 2003 with my partner for my first ever Mardi Gras!

A doctor friend of mine travelled to Sydney last year for Mardi Gras...he said he couldn't believe what everyone was doing at the parties out in the open.

Sounds like my kind of scene!

Have fun and be careful luv!

Mx5_boy,

The games are in November, aren't they? I won't be able to make it (doh!) due to my commitment to uni (it's exam time!). However, my partner's uncle is going to be taking part in the swimming. Not sure which events though.

Yeah, it's a shame I won't be there this year, but I swear that I'll be there next year to see what the hype is all about!

Just on a sidenote, I can't wait till the new Ansett takes the the skies. With this whole saga unfolding, I'm sure Uncle Reggie must have turned in his grave several times over.

Mx5_boy -- Thanks for the cheer! Of course we can't wait to experience our first Australian Mardi Gras ever! I believe we are going to the parade and the party (we had to join the membership thing and ask for one ticket each). We also want to see the sights of Sydney though (beaches, bridge climb, other touristy stuff) so I can't imagine partying every night.

In any case, I'm sure it will be sensory overload, which is why we scheduled Turtle Cove AFTER Sydney...

TM,

You'll have a fabulous time at Mardi Gras! Myself and my new partner went to the opening on Friday night and it was jam packed at the opera house.

One thing you will find in this city is that open displays of affection between gay couples is not frowned upon or derised. People here just take it for granted.

If you want maybe you'd like to catch up for a beer somewhere? Troy would love some North Americans to yap too and I'm happy to meet a fellow aviation a.net friend for a couple of beers.

E-mail me on mx5_boys@yahoo.com. And I'll give you my cell phone number!

Hope your here for fair day as it's absolutely max fun!!

Cheers,

mb

How was the launch then????? I went over to the North shore to see a mate and watch a video.

Definently going to 'Shop Yourself stupid' and Fair Day.

I might give the Parade a miss. I just hated last years Parade. Awful and I could hardly see a thing. Did you hear they have only sold less than half of the tickets to the Party. Any wonder at $113 a ticket which is a bloody rip off. I agree it is a bit of a drug feast!!!!

Cheers

Brent,

Yeah, $113.00 bucks for the dance party is a bit rich. Not surprised that many are not attending as when they keep the party on the dance / drug theme (even though they say no-takes drugs at Mardi Gras) those of us that are not into that scene are alianated or provided with pathetic alternatives. I think it's time for them to re-think the format and make it a lot more accessible to everyone.

Now the launch on the other hand was packed out. Nothing really interesting to report as we were sitting in the bleachers drinking champagne and being silly. Some Canadian gay comedian is out here which took Troys attention for a while. The atmosphere was great though!

Yeah, am going to fair day too.

Cheers,

mb

Just hope it is not stinking hot on Fair day.

Yes MG does need a revamp. I personally think MG has become a victim of it's own success and it is getting to look very 'tired' Did you read the Guide this year. Wasn't it simply the worst!!!!!!

Still we shouldn't be negative cos overall MG is just fantastic !!!!!

Cheers

Brent,

How rude of me, would you like to catch up on Fair Day for a beer or something? I'll have hopefully a few a.netters - YSSY -board guys to have a chat with, can't keep that airplane talk all to ourselves on that day?

E-mail me @ the above address if you would like to. Always good to meet other aviation fans out there.

Cheers mate,
