The origins of the Berber tribes are very mysterious indeed. While most of today's Sephardic Jews were originally Berber tribesmen or descendants of Berbers, this does not mean the Berbers were Diaspora Jews---more likely they originated in the Kingodms of West Africa and migrated northward intermingling with Phoenician and Carthaginian culture over the years.

Berbers are certainly not Arabs. To some extent they were assimilated by the Arab and Muslim invading hordes circa 750AD, but it was Berber tribesmen (as new Muslim converts) that led the war into Europe (Andalusia, etc). But Berber loyalty to the Arabs was always fickle---loyalty was to tribe above all else.
