The Most Politically Important Songs

Wed Feb 13, 2002 1:16 pm

What songs do you think made the biggest impact in society and politics? Obviously the '60s are full of songs which sought to inspire a generation to bring about social change.

I heard that President Nixon cried when he heard the song "Ohio".

I agree, this really turned the tables after listening to New Kids on the Block. This really opened the door for Gangsta rap.

Cars - Gary US Bonds

I was totaly against cars until I heard this one. Then I respected them and even got laid in one. Now I can safely say I will forever own a car.

Giving Up Anything For Lent?

Wed Feb 13, 2002 2:16 pm

What will you give up for Lent?

I will try to avoid adult sites on the net. I know it'll be difficult that's why I think it's a worthy sacrifice for Lent.

Sometimes you get songs that seem to mark a turning point. 'Toy Soldiers' in 1989, which almost sounded like some kind of funeral march, seemed to mark the end of '80s optimism and the beginning of our descent into the '90s malaise. 'Ordinary World' in about 1992-93 marked the bottoming out (as did movies like 'Life Stinks' and 'Falling Down'). 'All I Want To Do Is Have Some Fun' in 1996 marked a restoration of optimism as the economy began to recover.

Incidentally, there was one song from the late '80s called 'American Dream' that seemed almost like a political prophecy for the '90s:

I used to see you on every T.V.
Your smiling face looked back at me.
Then they caught you with the girl next door,
People's money piled on the floor,
Accusations that you try to deny,
Revelations and rumors begin to fly.

It wasn't big hit here in the UK, it may have been in the States, but one song I heard a few years ago had the "Wow!" factor in terms of its lyrics for me. It was called "Television" and was a sort of rap song, although a bit difficult to categorise. I can't remember who it was by (if anyone knows, please tell me), but the sentiment was devastating in its critique of the medium.

Guaranteed not to be promoted by MTV.

I actually agree with RealHigh.

"By the Time I Get to Arizona" - Public Enemy

What in the blue hell does Don MacLean's "American Pie" have to do with politics??

Most songs by Rage Against The Machine - may not be considered as "important" but almost all make some kind of very relevant political statement.
