Interesting you ask how to pronounce a word through a forum. You could pronounce it however you interpret the phonetic spellings you're going to get off this thread.

I think its KuarTar or something to that effect.

There is one person and their user name is "Qatar". I saw in a magazine that it was pronounced KAH-ter. That's never how my teachers ever pronounced it and it sounded weird to me, so I wanted that backed up by someone else who knows.

A lot of people can't pronounce the names of several Middle Eastern countries. So i'll try to help some of you out:

Iran = "EE ron"

Qatar = "GHattar" (the GH is hard to pronounce, but try your best  Wink/being sarcastic

Iraq = I'm not too sure on this one but I think they pronounce it Eh Rugh (Rugh is pronounced like rug but with the GH sound at the end). It might sound silly saying it that way in English so the alternative would be "EE rock"

Hope that helps,

When I was there, I also heard many people pronouncing it Ghuttar, and Cutter. It is a very interesting name!

You must be having ESP and read my mind because I have been wanting to do this thread for some time but never got down to it, so QATAR = KATAR with the "TH" sound from "TOO-TH" in the English language, it may be something else in Arabic, I heard my cousins husband whos an Arab, pronounce it "KEHTER", also SHARJAH is "SHARQAH" in Arabic.
.....up there with the best!

DQIQ  Big grin Big grin Big grin

(means flour)
