Would You Pay For The Internet?

Wed Feb 20, 2002 9:48 am

Aside from what you pay to access it. Would you pay extra to connect to sites?

Uhm no. The way I see it, most sites make money from us, either directly or indirectly through advertising. So, I wouldn't pay more than my ISP fee. There are some exceptions to this. My AOPA membership fee gives me access to the member side of the website, which I think is really valuable. But paying for the internet in general? Naw.

I pay ~USD45 a month for my cable modem. 256Kbps upstream and 10Mbps downstream (0.256/10)  Big thumbs up  Big thumbs up  Big thumbs up

And that's all I'm willing to pay for the net.

I pay $45 CDN per month for cable access, probably the only site that I would pay for is this one.

There isn't much that in on the net that is worth paying for. The 15 bucks a month for my ISP is plenty, and it serves me well. It is almost never busy and it is pretty damn consistent.

If I need speed I go to work. Nothing like 100mbps LAN connections. I don't think I'd be very willing to cough up the extra money for broadband at home. I just don't really see a need for it for myself. Sure porn downloads faster. But unless I telecomutted I don't see the need, YET.

Well I can top all of you (besided Joona if he has a 100mbps connection)

I have VDSL  Big thumbs up

To qualify for the VDSL (very high-speed DSL) acronym, a modem must transmit more than 10 Mbps, either symmetrically or asymmetrically. Generally, VDSL is asymmetric, and its operating range is limited by the length of copper wire used to reach your home. The Choice TV & OnLine service utilizes fiber optic cabling into the neighborhood. This shortens the length of copper wire used to reach your home. This enables data rates up to 52 Mbps which allow us to offer approximately 181 digital video channels and a high-speed online service.

Iflycoach, that's amazing! I wish I lived in a area that had VSDL. I only have a 1.5 up and 1.5 down dsl connection, but it still rocks!

Yea, that's about what I get on the internet line about 1.5 up and down.

Most of the bandwith is reserved for the TV channels  Sad .

checked my speed it's supposed to never fall below 256 up and 7somethin down or I get the month free. Supposedly I am supposed to send a screen shot when this happens, but I don't see that happenin.
Luckily I live 2 blocks from the telephone co. substation, so the length of wire is short and brand new, since they spent 3 or 4 days running a line from the station to my house. It was supposed to be a private line, but my nosy neighbors called and complained and the Phone Co. hooked them up to my line. I don't like them very much anymore. As fate would have it, my wife babysits their two children, so I get my vengeance daily by teasing their children. They will rue the day they invaded the sanctity of my dsl line, I tell ya!

I use Comcast HSI, $48 a month and truly terrible service when everybody gets home from work and use their connections at the same time.

Very quick at 2am, however. Time to consider a switch to DirecTV DSL, I've heard they're much better.

My connection used to be 100% free, but now it's £5 per month, I think, but I might pay extra for NTL Broadband..

Iflycoach: Joona, you sure that isn't 1Mbps?

1Mbps is SLOW. [start repeat] Like I already said, 256Kbps upstream and 10Mbps downstream. [stop repeat] That means 32kB/s upload speed and 1250kB/s download speed at maximum. My record is 900kB/s (nine hundred). And also a few days ago I downloaded 3 GB in less than two hours so go figure... With 1Mbps you get 125kB/s, with 10Mbps it is 1250kB/s..

174thfwff: Can you tell me your isp and your area please?

My ISP is Helsinki Television and my area is Northern Helsinki, Finland. I use TV cable; my modem uses the same cable as my TV. I divided the TV cable into two cables with the other going to TV and the other to modem. Using TV network is much better, because the connection will be much faster than with phone/DSL-lines. And this is faster and cheaper than the fastest DSL will ever be.

And I pay USD 45 a month for this.
