Mel Gibson Makes The Same Movie Over And Over!

Thu Feb 21, 2002 9:51 am

Braveheart: Disaffected Scottish rebels, led by Mel Gibson, fight the English for their land. Some Englishman kills somebody who Mel Gibson loves, making him extremely angry. Mel Gibson thinks up innovative battle tactics to turn the tide. There are several large scale bloody battle scenes where Mel kicks a$$ and takes names. When the rebels are at their lowest point, Mel rallies them with a call to freedom and a unique decorative procedure. In the end, the rebels eventually win, but their triumph is reduced to mere end screen text preceding the end credits.

The Patriot: Disaffected North American rebels, led by Colonel Mel Gibson, fight the English for their land 900 years later and 3,000 miles away. The difference is that this time Mel's gang has muskets. Mel thinks up innovative battle tactics to turn the tide. There are several large scale bloody battle scenes where Mel kicks a$$ and takes names. When the rebels are at their lowest point, Mel rallies them with a call to freedom and an American Flag. In the end, the rebels eventually win, but their triumph is reduced to mere end screen text preceding the end credits.

We Were Soldiers: American soldiers, led by Colonel Mel Gibson, fight the Viet Cong to defend the Republic of North Vietnam. The difference is that this time Mel's gang has helicopters and M-16s

Let's hope that this is where the similarity ends...

In We were Soldiers, did he suffer at the hands of the evil English who had infiltrated Vietnam to fight against the Americans?

Have we upset him at some time in his life???  Big grin

No. I think he was fighting Turks under incompetent British military leadership who have no problems sacrificing Aussies to the Viet Kong.

Of course this all happens in a post World War III hell world where gasoline is more precious then gold.

Can't be British, L-188, he likes the Scots. It's just the English who are soooo nasty! Big grin

What is Gibson, anyway? Australian or American? He doesn't seem able to make up his mind, poor lad...

I think Mel Gibson gets my Thin Bronze Line award for Most One Dimensional Actor. Previous winners are:

Jim Carrey
Sylvester Stallone
Arnold Schwarzenegger

Kudos to you if you get the secret geometry joke!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

FLY--- if you think mel gibson is one dimensional you need to see more than the two movies he was in that you mentioned. granted patriot and braveheart are similiar but also braveheart was won of the best movies EVER made. also braveheart was true as was this one coming out. i am going to guess youre in your teens so you werent around when lethal weapon came out but he did those 4 all awesome, mad max movies, conspiracy theory, payback, ransom, one of his best roles in man without a face, hamlet, forever young, and maverick. now watch those come back and still say he's a one dimensional actor. those three guys you mentioned are very one dimensional actors but mel gibson IS NOT one if them in fact he's one of the best actors out there today.

You are forgetting some of his best performances. Those in movies such as Gallipoli (the best war movie I have seen), Tim and a host of others.

Compromise:

Maybe he's not one-dimensional, but you still have to admit that the preview for We Were... looked exactly like those for Braveheart and Patriot.

Braveheart was true? Are you mad? It wasn't anywhere near the truth! Braveheart took the simplistic line that the Scots were brave heroes and the English were nasty baddies. The truth is that the situation was much more ambivalent than that, with both sides doing honourable things and both sides behaving cruelly.

As for Gallipoli, well that was just an absolute disaster from start to finish (the event I mean, not the film which was actually rather good) with dreadful incompetence throughout the campaign. What should have been a lightning campaign was bogged down by administrative incompetence with the resulting massacre of allied troops. One thing about Gallipoli that is rarely mentioned, and by no means undermines the extraordinary bravery of the Anzac troops, is that British casualties were by far the highest of all the allies. This slightly undermines the commonly taken view that the British viewed the Anzacs as expendable.

Mel Gibson + 'Historical' films = Rubbish.
In Gallipoli he was at an early stage in his career, and a co-star, and Banco's right, it's an OK film.
Is this new one an effective remake of that awful 'The Green Berets', John Wayne's 1968 film where he puts his arm around a young Vietnamese boy at the end and tells him 'you're what this is all about Son'.
Bet that went down well with the real thing on the TV news every night!
Back to Mel, I've heard he's a real serious Catholic, that's serious in still being pissed at us for the Reformation! (Which doesn't seem to vex anyone else).
I'm surprised he never got to play a 'noble' IRA man, Hollywood's occasional treatment of that situation has always been simplistic beyond belief. (As well as allowing some actors to make utter fools of themselves).

Really? That's why Mel seems to have a big problem with the British?

Huh. I never knew he was a Catholic despite the fact that he plays one in Gallipoli.

Thanks for the info feed, GDB.

Personally, I'm partial to his remake of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.

The Green Beret is one of my "guilty pleasure" movie. It was blantantly propangist, but one has to be quite naive not to figure that out. BTW, don't you just love the ending when the sun sets on the east coast of Vietnam!

I really haven't heard anything about his new movie but from the title alone I think it's about the battle of the Ia Drang valley; The first major battle between the U.S. Army and the North Vietnamese Army in 1965. It pretty much defined the type of combat--war of attrition and search and destroy--between the opposing sides.

FlyBoeing, you can apply that same synopsis to "Lethal Weapon," "Mad Max," and, for that matter "Mel Gibson's Hamlet."

Mel Brooks makes the same movie over and over again, too.

I know you aren't Dissing John Wayne...

Yes the Green Berets may be slightly cheesy but it is pretty obvious and that is part of what makes it a great movie Big thumbs up

An interesting note on the new Mel Gibson movie: The battalion 1/7 Cavalry "Garry Owen" was surrounded by several NVA regiments during the Battle of the IA Drang Valley, was the same unit that Gen. Custer commanded during the Battle of Little Bighorn. The outcome was different this time around.

I wonder if the movie covers the 2/5 battle at LZ Albany. They were overran by the NVA, but managed to fight and survive.

Why shouldn't he make the same movie over and over,
he gives the same ossified "performance" over and over.
Hasn't challenged himself as an "actor" since "Tim".

-another Hollywood A-lister with minimal talent, he must
be related to Tom Cruise.

People go and watch him though. If it's a choice between a film with Mel Gibson and film with Alan Rickman; people go and watch Mel Gibson.

Fortunately, people also go and watch films with Kevin Spacey, a brilliant actor, so all hope is not lost.

Yeah, Mel "hair plugs" Gibson he's no Steve Guetenburg. Now that's talent! Now, Steve you see plays a wide range of roles ranging from the ever loveable all american good guy to ever loveable all american good guy. I personally think some of his best work was that one movie, can't remember the title but he played a good guy and he was really great in it.
