What Do You Think Of Highway 1?

Fri Feb 22, 2002 3:57 pm

My question to all of you is: What do you think about highway 1 in California?

I´m planning to drive down there next summer. What is the best what is a must?

Can you compare it to any European scenery like the nort coast of spain or the Amalficoast in Italy!
What is the difference? What is better?

I think what makes the Amalfi Coast beautiful are the old italian villages build into the steep coast.

Well I don't know didly about either California OR European scenery, but if you drive down the "other" highway 1, or A1A or whatever they call it, in Florida, you get some of the best seaside or "coast" scenery to be found anywhere!

I love Highway 1.

I live a mile away from it. Too bad it's called 19th. Ave on that part of HWY 1.

Drive on it during the week when it is sunny. It's usually foggy or rain. You also should stay away from it during the weekends and holidays. Too many people drive on it and are traumatized by turns.
It's a winding road so it's best with fewer cars on it.
Also, it has lots of mudslides during rainstorms.

yes, thats what I heard! I´m coming next summer to San Francisco. I love this city! One of the nicest city in the whole world. I stayed many times in California. I took all my pilot licences up in Chico! But I never drove down HWY 1. The problem is, during the summer months, that it´s pretty fogy there. At least that´s what I heard!

But it should be one of the nicest scenerys in the world!

It's a great drive as long as it's not foggy. You will see some great ocean views, beaches, farms, greenhouses, and small towns. It is also a very fun road to drive for all its twists and turns. If you do go make sure to see Cannery Row in Monterey and also visit the aqarium there.

Monterey and Carmel are very beautiful, they're similar to Beverley Hills and Bel Air I guess.

Monterey has a nice pier with lots of yachts and stuff.

Highway 1 is great. I've been on it twice. One of those times, it was on a 52 seat tour bus. That's wasn't very fun for a lot people (the only thing that I didn't like about it was the fact that we were going so slow and we had to get all the way from Monterey to Los Angeles). I think that busses should be prohibited from driving down Highway 1.

I agree, the drive from Morro Bay up to Monterey is very scenic. However, don't forget the stretch of the highway north of San Francisco from Mill Valley to Mendicino and in Los Angeles from Oxnard to Santa Monica.

Thank you guys!

Do you have any suggestions where I can stay over night? Something between Monetray and Big Sur.
The best would be something with Ocean View!

From Pt Arena, south to Point Sur is fantastic. The cautions noted above are true regarding fog and traffic. Bring warm and rain resistant clothing, and a thick skin regarding taffic.

While foggy in the mornings during summertime, I've found the the stretch of Highway 1 south of Carmel (i.e. the Big Sur area) to be relatively fog free during afternoons.

The further south you go, the less fog there is.

I've driven all of Hwy. 1 (not all at one time though). Parts are incredibly beautiful, and parts are just plain ugly. The Santa Monica/Los Angeles portions are ugly as sin. BUT.....Highway 1 runs underneath the runways at LAX, which is fairly convenient, I'd say.

I'm sure you'll have a blast. It's a great drive in a great state.

Someone mentioned A1A in Florida. We were vacationing there a few years ago, and someone suggested that we drive the scenic route on this highway along the Eastern Florida coastline. There were so many houses along the stretch that it was rare to ever see the ocean. Very disappointing.

Yes, I have been to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I do have to say it is one of the US maybe even worlds best aquariums (trust me I've seen alot of aquariums). It is very nice and the Kelp Forest display is amazing. You are in a room and there is an aquarium in front of you that must be 25ft tall. The jellyfish display is also something to see. It is worth a visit, expect to spend three - four hours there.

Cannery Row is where the aquarium sits, infact it is in a converted cannery. It played a big role in the sardine businuess until the late 1940s when the sardines disapeared. Now it is I don't want to say tourist trap but it is getting up there with things like a wax museum, candy stores, outlet stores, & etc.. It is still worth a drive threw though seeing as you will be at the aquarium.

Last summer I drove with my friends on Highway 1 from Santa Cruz to San Francisco. It was a gray afternoon and cold too. The scenery is breathtaking, you'll see hills, the sea, cliffs, and signs for strawberries  Smile I drove on Monday so there wasn't much traffic. We caught the sunset too in Ocean Beach. Very pretty indeed!
