Gay's And Disney

Sun Feb 24, 2002 8:03 am

Not meant as an insult or fight in any way, but can anyone tell me why gay people seem so drawn to the whole Disney culture?

Whenever I go to one of the Disney theme parks, it seems that a disproportinately large percentage of the people there-both employees and customers-are gay.

And most of the gay guys I know are all big fans of the Disney characters. One guy I know has spent thousands of dollars on Disney merchanside ranging from toys to clothing to videos and trips. Everey spare dollar he has is spent on Disney related merchandise.

I think it's cool that they have found a niche. But it seems to be an odd one to me because Disney seems to cater more to the traditional family setting.

One of my friends (who's straight) works at the physical plant at Disney and he says the park is like 50% gay employees.

I believe him too. No straight guy would prance around like a fairy in some costume all day.

Hmm, the same could be said of me, except it should read "...Every spare dollar he has is spent on flying and golf related merchandise." Go figure. Except I'm, ahem, straight as an arrow. But I do know some non-gay guys that are into Disney. I always thought it was a little wierd.

Disney doesn't do it for me either. Everyone has their little fetish for collecting things, for me being such a geek it is old macintosh computers. I don't think sexuality has much correlation to any hobby.

Saw on ABC World News Tonight, that Disney has introduced a new character. He is Mickey's cousin, Gerry Gerbal.

Disney was one of the first companies to champion same sex couples...ya know, like health care benefits applying to "the partner" even though they couldn't legally be married.

I'm not much of a Disney fan, except for The Emporer's New Groove - funny movie!

Except I guess that's pretty much irrelavant to the topic because I'm not gay.

Wow! I heard from the news that there're lots of gays at Disneyland. They're happy to go there. But I thought it's supposed for the "family" park (dad, mom and two children only).

I am part of that typical family. I am a brother, a son, and an uncle. Disney Corp. recognized that love is love and rights are for everybody, not just those who follow the social and cultural norms. Jesus loved us all, not just the straight people. Have good day.

Disney = $$$

Reports show that some gays have large disposable incomes.

Disney wants to help these gays part with their disposable incomes.

By the way, their theme parks make it easy to part with your income...those prices...I don't know how families do it...

Well the disposable income thinmg isn't exactly rocket science. It's not that gays as a group HAVE more money per se, it's just that most of them don't have a family to support; hence they can operate further into the black than trasitional families. If two accountants make $50,000 a year. One is married, with two kids and the other is a gay guy with a life partner, then of course the gay guy is going to financially further ahead.

Then if that's the case, then I hate to blow a huge hole in the gay pride balloon:

you aren't being courted by Big Business because it's "politically correct" to do so. They aren't doing it out of the goodness of their heart. They don't sympathize with you.

They only see you as a cash register. And all they have to do is ring the bell by holding some kind of gay "observance" and take the cash.

I'm surprised that big business is so not-discriminatory to homosexuals, but they hike the prices to keep the "riffraff" out.

I think I am the only homo in the USA that has never been to a pride celebration. I don't see me going to one anytime soon. It's not that I don't like gay people. But the ones that tend to "pink-up" everything are the ones I really don't like. If someone asks, I will tell them. In the mean time, I'm going to Magic Mountain!

I'm not gay, but my kids enjoy the Disney crap In particular, they like Beauty and the Beast. My wife took my twin girls who are 4 to see the play and they loved it.(for $65 dollars a seat, they better have) My son had no interest in going, so I'm pretty sure he passed the, I Don't Like Disney So I Am A Heterosexual Test (TM)  Smile . I agree with Seb146--- I find all that crap repulsive when they hold a big parade downtown and either "pink up" everything or wear quite skimpy clothes... and the paper prints this stuff.  Yeah sure

And I hate Disney with a passion.

>>I think I am the only homo in the USA that has never been to a pride celebration.<<

Erm... no, you're not the only one.

The fact that someone sleeps with guys instead of girls should have NO bearing on anything else in their lives. To identify with someone purely on the basis of your sexuality should mean that 95%+ of the world's population get on perfectly. Of course, this is crap, as is the notion of identifying with people just because they're gay too.

Get real. I will not pretend to understand why people have "gay pride" parades and all that crap... because in all honesty, you don't see Straight Pride too much.

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand and certainly don't see the need for that kind of crap.

Sexuality is a personal issue and no one should have any reason to tout it to anyone else as it's a pretty safe bet that no one else cares. I know I sure don't.

STOP THE GAY PRIDE CRAP AND JUST GET ON WITH LIVING YOUR LIVES! And for what it's worth, I have, nor will I ever wish to, join or in any way condone such events.

Yeah, because us straights are totally oppressed and discriminated by gays right?  Yeah sure

Dude, how about you stop the hate, the ignorance, and the prejudice AND GET ON WITH YOUR OWN LIFE? You don't have to condone anything. Maybe you outta just get over something you can't control.....

Opinions are what they are brother. A lot of energy is wasted in here trying to convince other people that one's opinion is fact. That's always a losing battle. I can't think of a single time someone's mind was changed because of something posted in here. I prefer to get in my digs and watch the battle.  Laugh out loud

Don't worry Seb146, you, N863DA, and I can play cards the next time there's a gay pride parade. I tend to second N863DA's opinion that parading down the street dressed in drag isn't pride, it's foolish. I realize the need to make the gay community heard, because if no one does then we'll fade to the background and none of the things we want, like equal rights, will be addressed, but there are better, more tasteful ways of going about it.
