LONDON (Reuters) - Anarchic comedian Spike Milligan, the zany genius behind the ground-breaking radio "Goon Show," has died at the age of 83, his agent said.

"He died this morning. I believe it was from kidney failure," Norma Farnes told Reuters on Wednesday

Indeed

He was a genius. Like JohnThaw and Nigel Hawthorne in their respective fields.

Another wonderful talent lost as an unstoppable and ever encroaching tide of pop-talent airhead celebrity trash sweeps across Britain

What a terrible day. Did you see the the other post about cartoonist Chuck Jones also dieing today ? SM's best work, 'Hitler, my part in his downfall' of course !

It all began when Peter Cook went about 8 years ago.

RIP Spike, what are we gunna do now, what are we gunna do now .... ?

Well, he was 83! We can't expect these people to live forever I suppose. I guess in about 20 years time we'll be saying the same things when the Python's go - Graham Chapman notwithstanding.

I have to say that all his brilliant work aside, the one thing Spike Milligan did which made me fall off my chair laughing was when he received a lifetime achievement award at the British comedy awards. For those that missed it, an already frail Milligan went up to receive it and was read a message from his biggest fan, Prince Charles. The message praised him to the hilt, and the presenter Jonathan Ross was halfway through when Spike piped up "Oh, the grovelling little bastard!"

Cue absolute anarchy, with the audience crying with laughter. As a comic moment, I think that summed him up. A true genius.

How sad.
I loved his anarchic 'Q' series.
Zero budget, with the mad sketches frequently interrupted by Spike and his co-actors, notably Bob Todd, breaking into fits of laughter.
In the 1980's he was a guest on 'Wogan', an early evening talk show, talking about his books recalling his wartime service, Terry Wogan asked what his job in the army was, meaning what regiment etc, Spike just deapanned 'killing the enemy'.
He got more outrageous as he got older, wonderful!
For me, in their different ways, Spike and Peter Sellars were the truly funny 'Goons'.

Good night Eccles, Moriarty, Minnie Bannister et al.

One of the greatest comic voices. Hilariously funny and, when necessary, devastating cutting; sometimes simultaneously. The Goons are dead; long live the Goons!

Grytpipe - Now Neddy, what does this aeroplane do?
Neddy - it flies
Grytpipe - it flies?
Moriarty - You realise this means the end of the horse-drawn zeppelin?

RIP Spike

Back in 1987 when I was living in England, there came along the great gale of about October that year (the famous one that ace weatherman Michael Fish missed)

The following day there was a letter in the Guardian which said

"If anyone is looking for me, I am under a tree in West Sussex. Spike Milligan"

I fell off my chair laughing. Brilliant

Met the man once at a goon show society meet in Westminster, Got him to sign the order paper of that days business in the house. Lovable chap, BBC had better rerun the Q series on cable rather than some of this other so called comedy
I just wonder what the four of them are doing now?
(i include the other genuis Mike Bentine in that)
Oh bring back its a square world
And just to close, on the radio tonight there was this snippet

A man answer the door to two vicars in balaclavas.
Who are you? he says
We are Jehovahs Burglars they reply
Canyou give us sanctuary from the police
Why?
They are chasing us because of our beliefs
What are they?
We believe you have a lot of money in your house!!

RIP
