Trichotillomania (Hair Pulling)

Fri Mar 08, 2002 2:04 pm

Trichotillomania consists of repetitive, uncontrollable pulling of one’s body hair. Most commonly, scalp hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows are pulled, although hair may be pulled from any location. In some cases, trichotillomania is related to an increased stress level at home or school, while for other children, it is simply a learned habit that has strengthened over time.

I suffer from this. Since August, I have pulled my hair out continuously. First, a bald spot in the top of my head, but it grew back after resisting urges to pick. Now, I am picking at the back of my head and I have a 2 in bald spot, but I wear a hat and mat my hair over to cover it. It is extremely embarassing and hard to deal with. Does anyone else suffer from this?

My first response is: Can you get some kind of help for this?
My second response is: I also pull out hair from a particular area of my body--namely my eyebrows and lashes. However, it is very much a controlled thing as the only reason why I do it, which is perhaps once a week, is because these hairs tend to fall out anyway and seem to always get into the eyes. So by periodically pulling the loose ones out, I tend to avoid them falling in the eyes.

There is no known cure. They are still tracking down a possible gene for it. You can take anti-depressants which are said to work good. Also, squezzing a stress ball or another object to concentrate on something else is good.

Mine is like this I guess.

But, for like 2 inches, I pulled the follicles out on the back of my head.

Don't be ashamed of "the spot".

Lots of men are bald and I'm sure they still get laid and stuff. just don't combover, that looks tacky.

you should be able to take propecia to fix that up right?

When I was 8 or ten years old I started pulling out my eyelashes one by one. I didn't have any left and then proceded to convince myself that visine made them grow back. I was under alot of stress at home. My father was drinking and abusing us all (mom, sis). I was also being abused by my cousins (sexually). I am now a manic deprssive and have had succesful treatment with Zoloft and counseling. I have never heard of this info thanx. I have always needed to understand things...knowledge is power.

I constantly pull out the loose pieces of my hair and sometimes tug at my eyelashes and stuff. I don't think it's really a big deal unless you scalp yourself.
