I Am Sick & Tired Of Tourists At Ground Zero

Sat Mar 09, 2002 2:10 am

That's it. I've had it. I can't take it anymore. I work on Broadway & Fulton (1 block away from Ground 0) and this is the case:

Everyday when I am going to lunch the're are a whole bunch of tourists from all over the world just blocking the side walks, the streets, shops it's ridicolous. I very well know that they are bringing in revenue for the city but for crying out loud don't they get enough of the damn disaster area. They just love to gaze at it and stare in disbelieve. People, get over it already. It happened, affected every human being but it's time to move on.

How would you guys feel if you were in my shoes?

Saw pics of it. Nothing but a hole in the ground and a little of the mall is left. Otherwise except for that and some debris, its just a construstion crater.

OK, maybe these people want to pay homage to the victims and relfect on the whole thing. Just like you do by using the Reg # of a crashed New York airplane.

I think you should get over it (meaning the tourists). Just because you've dealt with it doesn't mean everybody in the world has. This will eventually go away, but it's only been 6 months... may seem like an eternity to you, but if these people are coming from all over the world, it takes awhile to get over here.

Look at this way: it's good for people to see this in person and really impress on their souls the evil that terrorism does. It helps build world resolve to combat this. Your minor inconvenience pales in comparison.

P.S. You spelled 'ridiculous' wrong.

But how much homage is their to be paid. I am pretty sure the number of tourists on a daily bais surpasses the 1 million mark. It's ridicolous I'm telling you. You have to see it for yourself.

So, you want people to visit America, and especially New York again, seen as though the tourism industry is basically dead, but you only want them to do what you want?

I'm with N14053 on this one. It's out of hand. They've been selling tickets to the observtion deck and people are waiting hours / days to get up there. I live 15 minutes away and I haven't been there yet. I don't have any intention of going, either.

I hardly think most of the tourists are going there to "pay homage." More like they just want to see the disaster they've heard so much about. I guess it's easier for them to stare because it doesn't affect them as much.

Thank you MC. Have you seen all these people selling photos of the planes slamming into the towers and photos of people running in fear. It's disgusting. I actually came out on one of those F&^king pictues. If they wan't to sell my f&*^ing face then maybe I should get a cut as well.

I was there when the first tower came down and trust me till this day I have breathing problems from all the crap in the air. (different topic)

>>I guess it's easier for them to stare because it doesn't affect them as much.<<

I'm not sure what you mean, but if you're saying looking at the site doesn't affect people, I would strongly disagree with you. Why would people waste their time to buy tickets and wait two hours to see the site if it didn't affect them personally?

It's human nature to want to see the site and try to comprehend what happened. Just hearing about it without seeing it first-hand isn't enough for a lot of people. This event drastically changed the world.

I'm English, I'm thousands of miles away from New York, but I saw the worst terrorist attack, the death of 3000 people and a 767 hitting one of the WTC twin towers live. Of course it affected me.

Selling pictures like that is messed up. I've seen a few around and it's sick. Fortunately those street vendors are the only place I've seen the pics. I haven't seen them hung up anywhere. And I don't expect to.

There are also a lot of places that have pictures of the towers still standing and "we won't forget" or something. I don't think we're in danger of forgetting anytime soon, anyway.

No, easier for them if they were not directly affected, ie. at the site at the time, knew people who were killed, happened in their city, etc.

Ahhhh... gotcha. In other words, people who were most directly affected would find it hard/too painful to stare at the site, whereas those who weren't directly affected don't have that problem.

Well, maybe. But it seems to me a lot of families of those killed have been pushing to be able to observe the recovery effort at the site since day one.

Yea I agree with N14053. It's gotten out of hand. Now the site is like a tourist attraction. I mean, I guess the tourists wanna see what happened, but it's gotten so crowded and out of hand.
I'm always hearing people ask for directions to the WTC, or if I went to see it, or declaring to one another on the train that they;re gonna see it. Well I could the towers out of my window, and that was enough. I will admit that I did go down there 4 days after the attack. (We took the 4 train to city hall (for some reason it was stopping there for a while) and snuck in). But that was enough for me. The site is a sacred place, not a movie theater or Times Square.
The tourists are gonna do what they wanna I guess. I mean, they are bringing in revenue and all (which is good).
And I know what you're saying about the pictures of the attacks. Some of these people are so eager to make money, that they will sell anything. In Chinatown, you can get the pictures anywhere (for a high price).

I guess we just gotta live with it as NY'ers.

I've talked to quite a few teenagers who have gone and seen it. Most of them just did it because it would be "the cool thing to do" while in New York. It seems like most go just to take a picture and be able to say they've seen it.

I am actually more proud to say that years ago, I looked down upon Manhattan from the legendary Windows on the World...I think that is a far better thing to brag about than seeing the ruins.

Long live the twin towers!

TWFirst: I think the families wanted to go down there at least once as kind of an informal funeral, since chances are their loved one's remains won't be found (even though they found 2 police officers yesterday). But I don't see them arguing to go down there every day. I see it this way:

3,000 innocent people were murdered here

3,000 innocent people including my husband, wife, child, friend, colleague, neighbor, etc. were murdered here.

Neither are easy to deal with. But those with a personal connection to someone who was killed may find it tougher to deal with a "birds eye" view of the murder site.

I am pretty sure the number of tourists on a daily bais surpasses the 1 million mark.

If one million people did indeed flock to the narrow, congested streets around the viewing area, bulldozers and dump trucks would be needed to remove the piles of suffocated corpses.

I, like millions of others have seen the drama live on TV. As a frequent visitor of NYC it affected me very much.
In February when i was in NYC for business, my schedule was extremely packed. But on my way back to JFK i ordered the driver to go down to the area in one of the side streets.
I was there only about 5 - 10 minutes just walking around. I saw the line of tourists waiting to get to the observation platform. It must have been somewhere around Chambers St. i don´t remember the place exactly where these obviousley sick people are selling sick stuff. T-shirts with picture prints, posters of the scenery from the impact until the collapse, baseball caps with "I visited ground zero", plastic Twin Towers on top of a plastic Pentagon, etc. etc.
I am not ashamed that i was there, for me it was a moment of silence. I was more ashamed of those who are making money there and those who are buying this stuff.

If you put it on TV people will want it...they saw all the events unfold on CNN so they of course want to see it for themselves. there isn't very much they can do......it is a bit like as you pass a fatal car accident the cars all slow down as they stare out the window at the crushed car.... that is Human Nature..

Well my friend. I just came back from eating my rice and beans. Right in front of the restaurant was one of those sick f#$ks selling pictures. I went and gazed at some of the ones that show people running from the cloud of dust and sure enough there I was. I hope you guys don't think I am some kind of asshole but this is what I did.

I took the table and flipped it over. The guy tried to jump me but I pushed his ass to the side (scrawny prick). Within 20 seconds police officers were holding him and I down. He was cursing me out and I spat right back at him. When the officer asked what had happened I told him that this guy was illegaly selling pictures of me without my permission. I kept stating my point over and over. I did not give this idiot permission to sell my photo. This of course is bullshit. I just don't want him or anyone profiting on this whole thing. It's sick. The officer told him to to take the set of those particular pictures and put them away. I asked the officer if he was nuts. As soon as we were to turn our backs he will put them back on the table. The guy ended up giving me the set of photos which was about 25 of them. I ripped them all right on his f&*king face.

You should've seen the group of people that gathered around. Forgive me again but the f#$king tourists were taking pictures of what was going on. I had to scream at one of them. I wouldn't doubt if I turn up in the paper tomorrow.

A lot of us get frustrated. That doesn't mean we're allowed to assault/threaten/destroy personal posessions and lie to a police officer. This guy should be arrested.

This "guy" that has the reg of a crashed plane as his user name, then bitches about people selling photos of ground zero.

777236ER,
Have you even been paying attention to what I am writing. Doesn't it make you sick to your stomach that people are profiting over selling images of the planes slamming into the towers. Dude. I just about had it with the explotation. It's sickening. I don't care what you say. You know what. I did have the right to do what I did. He was selling my picture without my consent. And if I catch any other motherf#$er selling pictures of me in the street I'll do the same thing.

For the record. The reason why I chose the user name N14053 is because I am a native of the Dominican Republic. I share my people's pain. I did not loose anyone on the doomed flight. And I am not related to that sick f*%k hustler. Who ever the hell e-mailed me the other day asking me if we were related - NO WE ARE NOT.

It's not legal to sell stuff on the street of NYC without a vendor's license. Why do you think all those guys on the street that sell the CD's and purses have them on a cloth: so that they can easily fold it up when the cop comes. 99% of these people selling pictures of the WTC during the attacks, on the street, are illegally selling material. Maybe you have to live in NYC to understand it. If I saw someone selling my pic on the street, I woulda probably done the same thing as N10453 (maybe not so violently), though.

Of course it's going to be a tourist attraction because people are curious about it. I've heard that no matter how much you see it on TV, one just can't imagine the devastation. If I were to visit NYC, I'd want to see Ground Zero in person. I just can't imagine what Ground Zero is really like. I feel like I'd owe a visit to the ones who lost thier lives, not because it's cool, but to pay my respect.

It's too bad that dope N14053 doesn't realize this. People don't go to Ground Zero to be entertained or because it's the trendy thing to do. As you noted, most of them probably go to pay their respects, or at least to see for themselves what this tragedy really entailed. I have been by Ground Zero many times, and most definitely have not seen people waving to the camera or otherwise acting light-hearted. Most observers look upset or at least thoughtful.

I'm 100% with N14053. I haven't been there (and I won't go to NYC anytime soon) but judging by how some airlines / touroperators sell trips to NYC, I don't think it's all about showing your respect. It's more like a disaster area turning into another "tourist attraction".

Yes there are probably people goind to ground zero to pay their respect (and I hope it's the majority) but I'm almost sure it will be turned in a "tourist atrraction" soon.

Certainly I would not go to NYC just to see Ground Zero, but if I am there anyway (and I do go there frequently -- once every 10-20 years) I will visit the site. I don't know why, I guess just because it is there.

Be a good sport, N14053!

Yes, but Ground Zero is now considered by many to be a Memorial Ground. It's not logical to think that it shouldn't be a tourist attraction--Memorial Grounds are tourist attractions. Imagine how NYC would feel if hardly noone wanted to be bothered with seeing Ground Zero? I can't tell you how many times I've seen New Yorkers on TV saying things like "people really need to come and see what it's like because TV does it no justice". Well, that's what people are doing. I believe the city welcomes the visitors, and it very well should. I wouldn't think twice about visiting there. I just thank God that I was able to visit the WTC before she perished.

I don't mean to sound so textbook like, but as an American, I don't feel the same sense of security that I did before 9/11.

If I'm in New York, I might go and see it. Will I spend an hour looking at it? Absolutely not.

N14053,

60 years and a handful of months since December 7, 1941, people are still flocking to see the oil leaking from the USS Arizona on the bottom of Pearl Harbor, "Ground Zero" of America's entrance into World War Two.

Deal with it and see ya April!!

I hate the idea of people thinking "Hmm...where should we go? I know, let's go to NYC to see Ground Zero!" I live and was there 9/11 and it's nothing you should be excited to see. It makes me sick  Yeah sure

I'm 100% with N14053. I haven't been there (and I won't go to NYC anytime soon) but judging by how some airlines / touroperators sell trips to NYC, I don't think it's all about showing your respect. It's more like a disaster area turning into another "tourist attraction".

It's normal human curiosity to want to see the site of such a vitally important event. September 11th was not just an ordinary disaster, but a paradigm shift that divided everyone's life into "before" and "after" phases and most likely will continue to affect our lives in yet-unforeseen ways for years if not decades to come. Let's assume that there is a terrible earthquake somewhere in the United States that results in 3,000 dead. While some people of course will want to see the site afterwards, it won't become a virtual place of pilgrimage as Ground Zero has become. In other words, people aren't flocking to Ground Zero because so many died there, but because it was the scene of a dramatic event that changed the course of history. And as I've noted elsewhere in this thread, people don't go there to be entertained. It's a very solemn place.

"Let me think about it" = the coward's way of saying "no"

I'll be in NY next week. I'm going to see. How can you got to New York City and NOT want to see it. It shows not morbidity or lack of respect. It's like visiting a grave.

As Americans, it become part of our collective heritage last year.

I imagine is actually fairly surreal until to see the magnitude of the destruction.

So N14053, which would you prefer?

1) No-one gives a sh*t and no-one goes to NYC.

2) People are curious, visit NYC and go to Ground Zero?

If I go to NYC in the near future (I am considering it), I would very likely go. Why not?

As for those who sell the "souvenirs", more fool the people who buy them, but if it was so bad, surely the authorities would have done something about them?
