Can Anyone Lend Me A Tri-Band Cell Phone For Usa?

Wed Mar 27, 2002 7:01 pm

Hey! I plan to visit North America in late April. And I will be in USA for around 4 weeks.

As you may know, Hong Kong uses a different Cell Phone System from the one in the US.

Does anyone have a Tri-band phone? Or a CDMA Cell phone? If yes, can anyone lend it to me?

Many thanks. And hope to hear from you soon!

Seriously, chances are still very low even without a SIM card.

A tri-band GSM phone works quite nicely in the US, as long as you don't stray too far away from the major metropolitan areas and selective major Interstate highways. I was in Dallas, Austin, and Seattle last Oct/Nov, and my tri-band works nicely, even while I was driving along I-35 between DFW and AUS.

The international roaming cost is a different matter though!  Wow!

Keep in mind, United Airline, that many phones have their SIM cards hard-wired to the phone, and thus you can't actually change the SIM card. There are phones of course that do (and I have one of them). However I'm on a GSM1900 network (how come even though the US can somewhat use the correct standard, they have to transmit on the wrong band!?!)

Given, the roaming charges will be astronomical if you use your SIM card on my phone (an example, I use my phone too much to let someone use it) If I try and go international with my phone, it's $2.49/minute for international calls, with $0.69/minute roaming on top of that. Not a pretty picture.

I have an extra tri-mode phone that works on AT&T. Their digital signal is crap in weaker areas. My suggestion is if you can borrow a phone, you can use a pre-paid card. Sprint and Verizon both have them but I'm not sure about AT&T. If the phone is only digital/analog (QCP 860, Samsung 411) you can use the pre-paid service thru Verizon if you are staying in one area. For nationwide on Verizon it needs to be tri-band.

A CDMA phone won't accept a SIM card, you need a GSM phone. In the US, I believe Cingular has a GSM network, in Canada Rogers and Microcell do.

Just buy a pay-as-you go unit. More expensive talk time will be more than offset by avoiding roaming charges. Plus, once you're done, you can probably sell the phone on eBay for like $20.

The only pure GSM operator in the US is not Cingular but rather VoiceStream.

AT&T is on its way to completely converting to the Global Standard for Mobility and they are spending a ton of money to do it.

Cingular has all the different standards, I don't know how any vendor makes them phones!

Rogers in Canada is owned by AT&TWS in the US.

US phones tri-modes don't have SIM cards per say. VoiceStream does but the others don't. They are all built into the phone and recognized by an ESN number.

United Airline, if you have a GSM phone, it should work in the US roaming on VoiceSteam's network just at the different bandwidth.

Anyway United Airline, if you need a triband phone, buy one on Ebay, you can probably get for AT&T a Nokia 5160 or an Ericsson R280LX for like 10 bucks. Take it to an AT&T store and buy a prepaid card. Then sell the phone again on ebay and your set.

Search ebay for Sprint and Verizon units as well, they also have prepaid.
