When you have a career with the longevity of Kylie or Madonna you have
to re-invent yourself. That's where the actual longevity comes from. If you stay the same and really just pump out the same old crap record after record people will lost interest and that's when these "boybands" and other manufactured artists only get a shelflife of about 3-5 years. Say you're a 15 year old girl (c'mon, I know you can
), are you gonna still be interested in the same 4 or 5 guys who have done nothing for that past 4 years but do the same album over and over again, just with new songs...not to mention now that they are slightly ageing? Or will you interests be transferred to a replica of that band, except they're younger and fresher?
Look at all the bands and singers that have been around: U2, the Rolling Stones, Madonna, and of course, Kylie. All of them have thus far had careers of more than 10 years (hard to believe it will be 20 years soon since Madonna first made a splash). What keeps people (at least myself) interested, is that they'll always try and do something a little different, and in Kylie and Madonna's case, they also find nothing wrong with being provokative. Kind of amazing to see how far Kylie has come from "Loco-Motion" and Madonna from "Borderline".
