Frivolous, Useless, Post-count Boosting, Posts:

Tue Apr 02, 2002 7:48 am

With the recent posts about "how many posts do you have", etc., an older topic has been brought up. That has been the quality of posts, rather than the quantity. The argument made frequently is that posts with no greatly important topic to discuss are those without relevance.

Well,
I go on roadtrips quite a bit, and while on the roadtrips, it is wonderful to get into the occasional, deep, intellectual conversation. It certainly makes the miles go by pleasently and wonderfully. Just as often, however, frivolous, good-natured, light-hearted joking, poking-fun-at, and meaningless dribble is exchanged. Laughing at cute signs on the highway, musings about things we don't see here in the city ("Cows!!!"), and so forth. Is this frivolity any less good than the deeper material? Certainly not!

To help understand what the difference is between a high quality post and a low quality post, offer these samples,
A post of low quality would be as follows:
Kill the faggots
I'm gonna' blow up your m*ther f*cking brains!
Death to (name of institution)!

Posts which discuss material not relevant to anything in particular, yet which are harmless, are not bad or low quality. Discussions in the past which have been accused of being low quality include
Toilet Paper - Fold or crumple?
The weirdest place you've ever done it...
Which member would you kiss?

These are not low quality posts. They won't change the world, granted, but they are pleasent and fun.
Haven't you ever just been sittin' around with some friends, joking about any old thing? Talking the small talk? It doesn't have to be deep to be good quality. it doesn't have to teach you anything grand to teach you how to socialize and have a good time.

Lastly, I find myself wondering why people think that those of us with eight or nine posts a day and thousands overall get most of those by posting meaningless stuff or low-quality posts. Maybe we have opinions on a lot of things, maybe we just like to socialize. Maybe we are completely pathetic thugs who simply want to get our post-numbers up, but realistically, most of the people with lots of posts are, I have discovered, those who are good humored, have opinions on a lot of things, and are generally relatively clever or witty. There is nothing wrong with making breif, shallow, or jestful posts. (It is for that reason that I marginally dislike the post-too-short feature, though it is not enough of a nuisance to seriously object to.)

Please do not stereotype people based on their post numbers or frequency, and please do not associate frivolity with lack of quality.

i agree! if you check out the posts on the civil aviation forum, the same topics come up. like whats your favorite plane, whats your fav airline or will BA every fly to ____ (fill in the airport) etc... and it sort of bothers me because one, it seems like the people just want to post, and want to get alot of posts for their topic. as you can see ive been a memeber for over 2 years, and i havent posted much, i try to keep the posts quality!  Wink/being sarcastic
Go big or go home

KROC, not sure if that's a "with all due respect, bucko - now get in line" or a "with all due respect" to the people who do get pissed at stuff like that. IN ANY CASE, I'm in favor of your antishafting policy. (I also, of course, am always in favor of the shaft itself.)

Be careful with your thread starters - KROC gets affected deeply if he can't understand everything about the subject in hand through the half dozen or so words you are allowed to use in the topic headers.....  Big grin

What is all this about post-count boosting?

Just comes naturally for me  Laugh out loud.

Ok now for the serious stuff. Um, Low quality posting. Well we have had some no brainer questions on this forum but the EXAMPLES given by JOHAN aren't any more exciting or taxing (ie. Why you will never buy a nissan and why Microsoft sucks..).

They won't change the world, granted, but they are pleasent and fun.

Talking about the way you fold the paper when you are on the crapper, oh yeah, very pleasant!
