Boston...Here I Come!

Thu Apr 04, 2002 11:55 pm

Three days ago I got my acceptance into Boston University, along with a scholarship. I've discussed it with my parents and I'll most probably be moving to Boston this July. I'm really looking forward to moving to the USA.

I'd like to know what your thoughts are on Boston University and the city itself!

PS: KHI747 maybe we can go spotting and clubbing together Big grin

I spent my college years at Emerson, which was at the time a stone's throw from BU.

You'll have a fantastic time in Boston. It's truly one of the world's great cities.

Good luck!

I know someone there, it's a nice school.

Try to do well there in the first few years and then transfer to Harvard. It's about the same price and in the same city.

As a resident of Rhode Island (borders Massachusetts to the south), I love Boston, no doubt about it. It is one of the most cosmopolitan areas I, personally, have ever experienced. BU will be a lot of fun. Cheers!

A a native Bostonian I can say that Boston is the best city in the United States. It's the prettiest large city, friendly people (although that is debatable). BU is a great school with a great reputation, however the campus is so-so. Incredibly spread out across a 4km stretch of Commonwealth Avenue. The city has excellent nightlife, with things happening every night of the week. And with upwards of 50 colleges and universities in the metropolitan area (population 4.3 million) there are always new people to meet. They say that upwards of 40 per cent of Boston's population is university students. Logan is a nice airport for spotting. Not an incredible amount of variety, but with 27 million passengers a year there's always something happening there. The only major drawback is that Boston has the third highest standard of living of all American cities (only NYC and San Francisco are higher).

Good luck, you'll love Boston.

Congratulations! You're moving to an all around AWESOME city. Plenty of stuff to do and if you're into nightlife you'll love it here. It's a diverse, fun, beautiful city.

Welcome to Boston!

It's a college kid's town without doubt. BU is located in a part of Boston that is home to several other universities and colleges, so you're bound to make lots of friends.

LH, being a native of Boston, and having lived all over the country, I DON'T rate Boston's inhabitants as the friendliest per se...that is, in public on a stranger basis. Bostonians are mind-their-own-business types who, like many in the heavily populated Northeast, approach interaction with strangers with some leeriness, cause let's face it, there are some pretty diverse personalities in those parts.

Midwesterners tend to be much friendlier on a "hi how are you' basis.

BUT one thing I will say....when you MAKE A FRIEND in Boston, it's a friend for life. I've found that Bostonians are far more inclined than everywhere else I've lived to make friends they know well 'part of the family'. Bostonians are less nosy and far more protective of your confidence in them. In Dallas, gossiping is an art form. In Boston, it's still bad manners!  Wink/being sarcastic

Marco: Love Montreal. Yep, it's still affectionately known as "Beantown" or the "Hub". Well, seeing as the drinking age is at the absurdly high age of 21, many of the clubs hold their age to that limit. go to NYC and get a real nice fake ID for $ 60-80 and that problem is all set. There are a lot of decent clubs that seem to have niches in the city. Many of the best clubs can be found on Lansdowne St, the Theatre District, and near North Station (FleetCenter). All musical tastes and themes can be satified. There are a lot of great restaurants that aren't extremely expensive. I guess to summarize: You can find something to do everynight of the week.

Heavymetal: This is true. We tend to look at friendly people as weird. However, once you've met people and become friends, Bostonians are some pretty chill people. I think we just tend to put a thicker layer of ice around us that makes it harder to break.

Hey, welcome to Boston. It is a nice city, although I find it a little dull at times...Just beware of us drivers, some of us are pretty bad...(this does not include me, I drive the speed limit and stay on my side of the road...)

In regards to our little airport, it looks like spotting might be out of the question, as Massport does not want us up there.

LH423: 21 is over doing it don't you think? It's the same here in Dubai but most of the time we get away with fake passport photocopies. I'm sure it's harder to get into clubs in boston though. anyways, thanks for the info, appreciate it! BTW just outta curiousity are you in high school too?

KHI747: you've got mail...

everyone else thanks!
