Movies That Have(n't) Held Up Over Time.

Sat Apr 06, 2002 4:47 pm

So I'm watching Animal House, and I realize that this movie is still as good today as it was 20 years ago. But then Stripes comes on, and it now sucks. I'll begin with a list of movies that I feel have held up well over time:

Animal House
Hoosiers
Bull Durham
Goodfellas
The Shawshank Redemption
The Godfather
Rocky (borderline--do you really think that the same guy who was in Stop or My Mom Will Shoot and Over the Top actually wrote such a great film?)
Apocolypse (sp) Now
Slapshot
The Bad News Bears

and some movies that were good, but are now dated:
Stripes
Top Gun
Major League
St. Elmo's Fire
The Breakfast Club
Ghostbusters (hey, I was a teenager in the 80s)

The list goes on, please feel free to add at will, always bearing in mind that the Cleveland Browns will win the 2003 Super Bowl and you heard it here first.

Don't worry, the Ravens will be the ones to keep the Browns out of the Super Bowl and you heard it here first.

I disagree with you about Stripes: Bill Murray gives his most brilliant performance here. Its timeless.

Also, about Top Gun and Breakfast Club: two important 80s films for me that - yeah - wouldn't work as a new movie today, but are great because they represent the 80s so well.

Saturday Night Fever is frickin' hilarious its so dated and b/c Travolta is so incredibly stupid. Again, its great since it will forever show us the 1970s.

Even though its intertwined so much with WWII and dated in a sense, I think Casablanca is the most timeless movie - the greatest movie - of all time.

The Falcon and the Snowman, Salvador, 9 to 5, & Urban Cowboy are all 80s movies that have lost a little for being dated, but are still ok.

Dated and bad: Mr. Mom, Smokey and the Bandit, Grease, American Gigolo, North Dallas Forty.

kind regards,
