Well, Sweden is a place to proud for a few things, its industry and freedom. Many clever inventions come from
Sweden or Swedes in exile...

Im proud to be an American because:

1. The world's largest Economy
2. Helps out many other countries (although people are always mad at us)
3. The Birtplace of Heavier-than-air flight
4. Boeing!!!
5. A government that is truly dedicated to freedom and democracy

Now Im not saying we're perfect, but I wouldn't want to be a citizen of anywhere else.

The UK:
History
Stable Goverment
Inventivness, (could do better at profiting from them though!)
Still a global player, very much reduced, but still there
Pragmatic, facism and communism never had a chance here
Ability to fairly successfully intergrate new cultures/influences

Perhaps most importantly;
Not taking ourselves too seriously!

the uk:

our history, our sense of justice and vaules, our stable government from king and council to monarchy to parliament to monarch and parliament.

The stength of our power, the fatc that small country once contrlled a 1/4 of the world, the fact that a small country took on hitler alone until the russians, the fact that this small nation managed to defeat a menace along with the russians and the usa.

our inventions, the television, radio, telephone, computers(the first being at bletchley park) to name but a few.

our culture..our unqiue heritage that allows for welsh culture, scottish, northern irish, cornish etc etc while keeping our nation together as one.

our multi-enthic, multi-religion diverese culture, the fact that we are one of the least racist western countries(though there are the odd outbreak)

our national airline...the biggest in europe and one of the most powerful airlines in the world..our strong economy, strongest in europe.

our sports teams add to the pride, their might not always be world champions but they add to our pride.

our language, rich in diveristy and one of the most popular in the world

and our ability to laugh , cry, moan, queue and to be friendly while not taking ourselves too seriously!!!!
It is amazing what can be accomplised when nobody takes the credit

Some more I forget to tell about the Netherlands:

- Biggest port in the world(Rotterdam)
- part of the EU, NATO and the Western world
- probably the best airport in Europe(Schiphol has won that title a lot of times)
- Philips, Shell, HEINEKEN
- only country in the world where softdrugs, euthenasia, gay-marriage and prostitution is legal(although I am not certain if I should be proud on all of those)

For Canada:

  • Not much nationalism: no 'national ideology' to conform to.
  • Political stability and moderation: we tend to have little fire in the belly when it comes to politics. (The cold winters cool the hotheads down, too.)
  • Incredible diversity: it really is "a community of communities" more than anything else.
  • Generally a nice place to live.

Sorry to burst your bubble, PH-BFA, but prostitution is legal in a number of countries, including the nanny state of Singapore.

Singapore's contributions to the world include, of course, Singapore Airlines, continually ranked amongst, if not the world's best airlines.

Creative technology, the company that invented the sound card and gave all computers sound.

More than three quarters of the world's disk drives are manufactured in Singapore.

We had the world's busiest port.

The second most dense country on earth. (I think).

We banned the sale of chewing gum, which explains why our roads are so clean. Everyone can chew them anywhere though.

A per-capita income higher than that of our former colonial masters, Great Britain. (Yet, we are called a developing country. Don't know why.)

And for all you flag waving Americans, Singapore is the tenth largest investor in the U.S. We boast the only dock outside of the U.S. where an American aircraft carrier can dock. And finally, over 80% of all air power on station in Afghanistan was serviced in Singapore. (Not that I approve of the attacks though).

Since my country of birth which is Canada is already taken I'll go for Germany where I live today...
1. German cars (BMW, VW, Porsche, Mercedes,...)
2. No speed-limit on the Autobahn
3. Germany finances most of the EU, the UN, 4 million unemployed, basically the whole world... and for that has a fairly low debt... But we've got the Ökosteuer too, so heck we are just fine  Big thumbs up

The United States:
-Diversity
-Varied, beautiful landscapes, from the Everglades in Florida, the deserts of the Southwest, to the volcanos of Hawaii, to the mountains of Alaska, to the wheat fields of the Midwest, to the craggy shores of New England. Nearly every type of physical landscape is represented, including a rain forest (Olympia National Forest in Washington).
-Friendly people...just don't look too hard for them in New York  Smile
-Great cities (Boston, New York, Washington, Miami, Chicago, LA, SF, Seattle)
-Birthplace of aviation

There's quite a lot to be proud of in the US...especially the fact that we don't have NEARLY as much pop music as Europe  Laugh out loud

Must admit I was wondering that too! Maybe it means no racial problems such as the riots we suffered in northern England thanks to small-minded idiots on both sides. At least I hope that's what it meant!

-Lawyers (where else in the world can you spill hot coffee on yourself or smoke and become a millionaire?)

I think you mean, where else can you be a retarded moron and get paid for it?  Smile We have the same in the UK I'm sad to say. Big companies that exist purely to sue on behalf of stupid people.

Eal, yes, this is what I meant.

In Lithuania there is only one race (still no immigrants except for ones from middle east), but several nationalities, including Lithuanians, Russians, Polish, Byelorussians, Tatars, Chigans, etc. Unlike some other (also other Baltic) countries, ethnic minorities has equal rights as the majority and there are no people who are offending them because of their nationality or religion (i. e. it is equally safe for Russian and Lithuanian and Polish and Arab and Jew here. Even if somebody hates some nationaliy, they doesn't attacks them).

You should know, that the Human Gender admits no race. Biologically, we are all from the same race with different "features".
Surprisingly, Americans still speak of race to say color.
Being proud of that just means that you are a deep racist. I wouldn't have said that if I were you.

Sebolino, were these comments of you directed to me? Why not to be proud that there are no rednecks, KKK, other racial/religical/etc. pressuare organisations?

Werether you will agree or not that races doesn't exists, there still will be the people who will be racist.

I think it is good that there are no such problems in my country. There are several blacks and Asians (however, not more than 20 maybe in whole Lithuania) but there are no racists at all. Maybe this is because of propaganda in Soviet Union times about how bad is America -- one of the main anchors of that propaganda was how they oppress blacks.

I'm proud of Singapore because it's a tiny nation which has come very far in a volatile region.

Great airline, great port, excellent airport, hardly any poverty, great infrastructure, safe streets, political stability and a high per capita income.....

(Per capita income here is S$65000 a person which is USD35 000. After Purchasing Power Parity is taken into consideration, I think Singapore is one of the top 10 richest countries in the world)

Minus point: too sterile and too well organised. (but is that bad??)

Also, the Singapore passport is excellent when travelling. No one stops you, everyone waves you through and you can enter every country in the world without a pre-obtained visa. Which is why all the illegal immigrants from the poorer countries in Asia love forged Singapore passports. You can look Indian, Chinese or Malay or Eurasian and still pass off as a Singaporean.

For United States I am proud of all that has been said before. Also something all Americans should be proud of... We supply probably 98% of the world with movies from hollywood! If it werent for that, imagine the type of movies everyone around the world would be watching! Also, we are extremely advanced in the space program. Not to many countries can take claim to that! Finally I must also show my pride for Boeing and knowing that Aviation was born in my country! And then also being the strongest nation is always a positive! But as we all know, being the top dog of the world always spawns many enemies and hate for us!

-our economy (the world's 4th largest)
-our health system (the best in the world according to the OMS)
-Paris, of course
-way of life and food
-Ariane rockets (ESA is a european consortium, but the Ariane rocket was a french project, following the successful Rubis rockets)
-our rugby and football teams

what i'm not proud of:

PH-BFA, maybe you're right, Italy has something to be proud of, but sincerily I'm not proud to be Italian except the language (I like Italian language) and the fact we are EU members.

"Together the EU is a great "country"".

I agree with you 100%.

I sincerely think that the EU is the best Country in the world.

The way of life is simply the top!!!!

OK, we pay more taxes than in other countries, but on the other hand we have the social state which is really useful and despite the fact it's expensive it gives us a better life.

The UE, the top of the world!!!

Like F.pier, i'm more proud to be european than proud to be french. In the EU, (except in UK perhaps), people begin to understand what being european means, beyond national feelings.

It's a really good thing, and now a lot of people wants a real political and united EU. It wasn't the case just 5 or 6 years ago. In a few decades, when the EU will be fully built, it will be a really fantastic "country".

I won't say it will be better than the US, because our way of life is different. The EU will simply be a great country, in its own way.

The European Union does not force its member states to have the same taxation.

"It takes out independence of countries"

'It takes out independence of countries, it has too heavy taxes (and forces all the members has the same), it has weak currency'

I really don't understand this. Lithuania is just dying to join the EU for economical advantages and you just say it is a bad idea. Also the euro is NOT a weak currency. How do you measure that? Because 1 Dollar is more in value then 1 Euro does not mean it is a weak currency. The policy of the European Central Bank is aimed at keeping the inflation in the Eurozone at a minimum and not aimed at a good exchange rate versus the dollar. You can say a currency is weak if a a country has a high inflation and constantly devaluates versus other currencies, like the pesos in Argentina and the Russian money. With all respect I must say Lithuania has a much higher inflation then the EU-zone, so I think your comments that the Euro has a weak currency is just totally wrong.

PH-BFA, Lithuanian government is dying to join EU, not the people. In current polls there are about the same amount of people who wants EU and who doesn't wants.

Lithuanian inflation is much lower than EU, in fact we sometimes even have deflation. The only two things which raises inflation are:
Rapidly growing cost of fuel (thanks to EU request to have fuel taxed the same as in other countries)
Rapidly growing cost of energy (thanks to EU request to close Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant)

The course of Euro is really devaluating over a time -- at the time Euro was introduced, it was 4.2 Lithuanian Litas per Euro. Now it is 3.65 Litas per Euro.

Nik, I meant the forcing to use Euro. I like to have Litas, which has pictures of Lithuanians on it, not some drawn buildings which aren't in Lithuania. The same goes also for the required to do things, like closing INPP and growing fuel taxes. Soon enough we will have to fly EU flag instead of our great tricolor...

"I meant the forcing to use Euro"

Sweden, Denmark and GB are EU-members and don't have the Euro....

"which has pictures of Lithuanians on it, not some drawn buildings which aren't in Lithuania."

In my hand I have a German 1€ coin. How can I tell it's German? Take a guess..

"Soon enough we will have to fly EU flag instead of our great tricolor..."

Riiiight.....

"Rapidly growing cost of energy (thanks to EU request to close Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant) "

Maybe because people don't want a very unsafe nuclear power plant in their back yard?

Nik, people wants INPP (in last poll only about half of people who answered "whould you like to join EU?" also answered "would you like to join EU if that would require closure of INPP?"). Maybe you find that strange, but Lithuanians doesn't care that much about pollution (which nuclear power plants has less than coal and gas ones also used in Lithuania by the way) and safety. Lithuanian wages are still low, and they aren't ready to pay much for energy. By the way, Lithuanian energy consumption per capita rate I believe is second in the world after USA and percent of energy produced at nuclear plants is 85, the highest in the world (second place -- France -- 77%). EU requires to close INPP because they fears cheap energy from Lithuania (only 30% of INPP capacity is being used)
Also, EU requires other strange things, including getting daylight savings time again (we've got rid of that a year ago and more than half of people likes the current state). What is the matter for EU werether we have daylight savings time or not?

INPP should be closed because of the risk of a disaster, not because of pollution. INPP is renowned for being unsafe.
As for EU being afraid of cheap energy from Lithuania, I simply don't buy it.

It is also a fact that the EU-countries + several other countries are going to help Lithuania pay for the costs involved in closing INPP.

Nik, not all costs will be payed by EU countries. INPP closure would cost whole yearly budget of Lithuania. And even if EU would pay all closure costs, Lithuania still would have to build a new NPP and this also costs much.

You can read a lot about the plans for energy in Lithuania in this pdf file:

Decommissioning of Unit 1 of INPP - Donors Conference, 20-21 June 2000, Vilnius, Lithuania
