When Did Rappers Adopt The Airport Code 'ATL'?

Fri Apr 19, 2002 1:02 pm

Since when did rappers adopt the airport code 'ATL' for when they refer to Atlanta?

I don't know, but when I was in Minnesota, my roomate was a guy from Miami and always reffered to it as MIA and didn't kno why nobody understood where he was talking about. Of course I knew and surprised the hell out of him.

Off the top of my head, the earilest song that mentions ATL that I can think of is "Hootie Hoo" by OutKast. Came out in 1994. Here are the lyrics:

So each one, teach one, I be claimin true/
To East Point and College Park and the things I used to do/
Around ATL, home of the pimps and the money makers/
Club niggaz, Magic City and them Southern playas/

ATL has been used to reference Atlanta for long before it started appearing in rap songs. Most notably it probably originated in referring to the ATL sports teams. You know ATL-anta. As Hartsfield mentioned, Outkast, being from the ATL probably were the first to rep the city in the rap game. With the increased exposure and popularity of Rap Music, "ATL" really caught on to referrence Atlanta.

I notice that no rappers ever mention Da R-O-C.  Smile

LHMark. Hopefully once I get signed and my budding rap career takes off, I can start reppin the R-O-C on a national level.  Big grin

Actually, in all fairness to Crapchester, it has gotten play from rappers nd NYC's best D.J.'s. Perhaps the best song is Boogie Down Productions "Superhoe" where KRS raps "Up in Rochester on DKX, WDKX, now DK-Sex..."
