Good luck with your carreer.
Remember that not all aircraft handlers work on carriers. You could as easily be assigned to a squadron of P-3Cs in Alaska  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I have never understood the attraction for the navy. I mean where's the fun being stuck in the middle of the ocean in a howling gale and feeling sea sick? Not only that but an aircraft carrier is always a target. I personally would much rather be in the Air Force (which I was). You still get to work on airplanes and it's a darn sight more comfortable.

Still, each to their own. Enjoy your career.

Good for you, young man! Did you see the recent NBC hour long program (hosted by Brokaw) about life on the U.S.S. Stennis? God bless and protect you.

Good luck to you. I joined the USN last summer and I am off to boot camp in June 20 after I graduate from high school. My job is an aviation machinist mate which i'll be in Pensacola, FL for couple months for on the job training. My job is landside and overseas, mostly work in the aircraft carrier.

you made the right chioce by enlisting in the Navy branch. Are you looking forward to go to Great Lakes?

Feel free to email me or AIM me about it. My email is Staggerwing777@aol.com and AIM is Staggerwing777.

Good luck to you.

Hey they closed down Adak NAS in 1997, so there are no P-3's up here in Alaska anymore.

Navy too bad......I feel for you....

Hawkeye:

YOu are finishing up your first year of Naval ROTC? Where at? I graduate in 1 year and am planning on doing a Marine ROTC, but there pretty similar right? Could you tell me a little about what your schedules like? Are you busy there? WHat kind of things do you do during the day. These ROTC counsolers are idiots, they don't know anything. It would be awsome of you could give me a little info.

Thanks

Congrats. It's always nice to hear someone willing to do their part for their country.

L-188. Go Army? How about Go Air Force!!!!! There was nothing better than being in the Air Force, but stationed with the Army (my AFSC included Army Support), and watching the Sgt's all lose their minds, because when they yelled at the Zoomies, we blew them off, because they had no control or say over us.

You guy in the Air Force are a bunch of weenies.

The helicopter unit I was assigned to had a weather detachment boarded in our barracks. They got money because they where allegedly below standard. Us ARMY, we got NOOOTHIIIINNNNNGGGG!!!!.

Weenies? just for prefering a comfortable bed to sleeping in the bottom of a trench?

Besides a real army goes into action without the support of a coke machine and a pizza or burger restaurant following behind.

Exactly!!! Saintsman. Why do you think the Air Force as all of those fast airplanes?? 30 minutes or less.

I'll tell everybody now, the first couple of months after a war isn't the time to be in the service.

L-188. I got extra money for the years I spent with the Army (weather support). Well, actually they implamented the plan sometime about midway through the 4 years or so I was Army Support. Thing is, Army Standards are allot lower than Air Force Standards. Also, for the most part, the Air Force actually cares about their people, which is why they have the best quality of life of the 4 branches.

As for being weenies, I'll tell you the same I told all the Army pukes in Korea, that thought I had it so much better as an Air Force guy their. I lived in the same shitty barracks they did. I had the same shitty curfew's as they did. I had to go to the field just like they did, live in tents, set up my own crap, drive HumVee's (which was fun), sweat my ass off with no showers in 95 degree humid Korean heat for over 2 weeks ect. I was one of 2 AF guys at Camp Page with 700 Army pukes. They actually had support, as a detachment, we got none. Our equipment sucked, and if anything broke, it was like pulling teeth to get someone to come out in the middle of nowhere and fix it, ect. $165.00 a month extra was nice (after 12 months of Army Support), but for the hassle.......please.

I'm only finishing the first year for now, but for now, I take classes, just like other courses in length, and we've got "lab" periods once a week. We've got traning camps and other activities during the summer as well, but that comes later. things aren't really that busy for me right now.

We're organized into a "battalion" which the senior midshipmen are in charge of, and divided into companies -- there's a lto of camraderie.

As far as I know, the Marines go through the same ROTC program as the Navy with a few specialized courses here and there, you'll just get commissioned in the Marines rather than the Navy.

Let me know if you've got any more specific questions!

L-188,

I'll tell everybody now, the first couple of months after a war isn't the time to be in the service.

Mind explaining the rationale behind this? I'm curious!

Because in my experience:

Everybody who was deferred discharge gets out right away. They don't give a damm other then where there paperwork is. It is a very very severe case of shortimers attitude.

They are only looking out for themselves.
