HK Will Have The Tallest Building In The World?

Tue Apr 23, 2002 4:15 pm

Hey guys!

I heard that Sun Hung Kei Properties, the largest land developer in Hong Kong, as well as one of the largest Land Developers in the World, will build the TALLEST Building here in Hong Kong at Kowloon West.

Has anyone heard of it? I heard that it will be taller than the Proposed Skyscraper in Shanghai.

Comments?

Why not? Hong Kong has the largest number of tall buildings per Metre Square in the World

Besides, Hong Kong is so populated.

That is true..
I thought it was goign to be MTR's one in Kowloon West? I read in the paper a while back it would be called "MTR TOWER"...

What's that really tall building on HK Island that they are building now? Does that belong to MTR?

When we talk about tall buildings, we have to define what constitutes "Tall". 20 stories? 200 metres?

So when Hong Kong has the greatest number of tall buildings per sq metre in the world, how do we define that?

Tall? Let me put it this way, 20 stories is hardly considered that tall in Hong Kong  Smile

If that's the building you are talking about from the above post it won't be the tallest building in the world. Shanghai's financial trade center will be taller. In Taiwan they are also building a tower that will be taller than the one in the pic.

I don't think that's the one. HK will definitely have one that is taller than the Financial Center in Shanghai.

Shanghai Financial Center: 460 Metres
Union Square (MTR Tower): 480 Metres

Not sure if you guys heard of Bionic Tower... It was supposed to be built at the middle of the Harbour on reclaimed lands...... They planned to build it up to 1200 metres tall.

well, planning is not always possible, heard that Shanghai was planning to construct a 'tower-city', which can have more than 100,000 residents in it (Hong Kong newspaper reported that, in abuot Auguest 2001).

hum...Hong Kong and Shanghai...both wants to have more and more skyscrappers. If they want do this just because 'can have better views from the towers', then I would say...if the buildings are much lower than the 'tower', it will be very nice. Just like Melbourne, I was at a office in Melbourne Central some months ago, the scene is great (of ocurse, the buildings besides are only 10 floors, but the tower is about 53 floors)

The way the pollution is going in major centres in Asia and elsewhere, in a few years there won't be any view to speak of, other than the top of that brown layer.
The Melbourne tower may not be at the top of the list, but on a clear day you can see a long way.
Cheers

Hong Kong isn't as polluted city as you think it may be, in actual fact, what seems to be Hong Kong's pollution is actually air pollution blown over from the mainland (China) where there are Special Economic Zones (SEZ's) such as Shenzhen. This is where there is a lot of promoted industry and therefore, with China's lower pollution control than Hong Kong, more pollution is emmited. Not to mention all the cars that emmit very high levels of Carbon Dioxide and Monoxide...its discraceful. The Hong Kong Government should work closely with officials on the mainland that those bad polluting companies clear up their act, it's giving Hong Kong a bad image more so than themselves.

Trevor, I'm sure you are right. Cross the border and it gets soooo much worse. But unless you can explain that to all the tourists who go up to the peak to peer at the haze, it will always appear to be HK's problem. And I think it will take a lot more than just talk to fix it.
As new technology, LNG, clean power etc., gradually takes over, especially around the Pearl River Delta area, maybe we will start to see some daylight (pardon the pun).
Hope so, I'll be back in HK next month, and a clear day would be nice. But I'm sure it will be clearer than Shanghai and Beijing - I'll let you know!
Cheers

Yea, it's a case-study we did for Advanced Level Geography...let's all wish it clears up.

TNboy, if you are comign to Hong Kong next month, give us spotters a ring and we can all go spotting, there are a number of people coming back from uni and all so it should be a good turnout!

Back to the topic, does anyone know the name of that tall building they are building on Hong Kong Island?

Actually the Shanghai financial trade center will be over 500 meters tall. After the construction was halted due to the asian economic crisis, the developer decided to build the tower even higher than originally planned. The construction will start later this year from what I've heard. They trying to build higher so to keep the world's tallest title for Shanghai.

Yep, it's the International Finance Center in Central. A340, which exam board are you using? I never had to do stuff case studies on pollution in Geography!

Skyscrapers, I heard are not economical beyond a certain number of floors due to the amount of space taken by lift shafts. Are they trading economy for pride and prestige? That Bionic tower sounds crazy! We get typhoons here! Unfortunately, not all HK's muck is cross-border but self-produced by our large diesel fleet. I think the relatively high pollution levels even when there's a SW monsoon blowing the muck to China's some proof.

Two International Finance center will be only 412m

http://www.skyscrapers.com/english/worldmap/city/skyscrapers/0.9/101300/index.html

Nowhere in that site does it mention a 500m building in Shanghai......

Financial Center in Shanghai is on hold supposed to be 466m

My correction its 7 South Dearborne Center, supposed to be 476m

I think I get it now. It's for Unit 6 isn't it? We haven't done any detailed case studies of polluted cities.
