What Would You Do?

Wed Apr 24, 2002 4:55 am

What would you do If you were a doctor. There are two newborn infants in need of a bone-marrow transplant.
Both are born at the same time to different parents.
The health of both are poor and getting worst. If they dont get the transplant soon, both will die. Both are in the same state of health and gwtting worst at the same rate. Now the problem is that there is only enough for one baby for some reason. There is no time to wait for another donor. What would you do? Play God and save one while letting the other one die? Or wait until one passes away then help the surivor? I know that in some of these cases the doctors would play god.

I ask one of my friends this and he couldn't come up with a definite answer.

From a medical point of view, the question is nonsense. There is always enough bone-marrow for two infants, as I think they always take bone-marrow more than enough for one adult, so it surely is enough for two infants (at least enough until they get a second donor).

Back to your question, I would surely save one infant's life. I wonder how anybody could come to another decission? Waiting until one passes away - stupid.

I would transplant into one infant and pray for them both, because bone marrow transplants aren't always successful anyway!

Neither.

I'd give it to an older child who knows he/she is dying.

Good call Transactoid! I agree wholeheartedly.

Transactoid: Once again I ask you to have a more medical point of view! How many people do you think are there who need the bone-marrow with the exactly identical (at least similar) DNA-code? Come on, chances to find *anybody* are really little, there is not the choice between dozens of people whom you would give the bone-marrow!
