I'm Writing A Sci-Fi Novella

Thu Apr 25, 2002 2:05 pm

This novella is a requirement for the writing fiction and poetry class I am taking. Here is what I have so far, not much for the 32 pages I've gotta fill:

At the end of the second millenium on Earth, no telescope could see and no scientific instrument cared to point toward a potentially Earth-dangerous 2,000 mile-wide Kupier-Belt object until had swung around the sun, lined up, and perfected its trajectory making its kamikaze run at Earth. Once it was too late, people finally stopped panicking in denial over their inevitable fate. Some people decided to chance their escape in experimental atmosphere escape pods while others did a slew of other things, among them freezing themselves and encoding their DNA protein structures into Binary code and sending them into outer space over radio transmissions in hope of aliens cloning them.
Then others stayed on Earth, waiting for the grand fireworks signifying the end of mankind. They built giant metallic structures to house them in protection from any element of the impact, hopefully. When the hour finally came, the surface of the Earth was dead silent the sky was eclipsed by the falling hell. In the end, the object collided right on the South American continent, separating the Southern Hemisphere from the rest of the world, south of the 20 latitude. As the Southern Hemisphere got smashed into pieces, magma bled into the solar system from the gaping hole on the other side of the Earth as it spun out of control into the universe. Eventually, the remaining hemisphere and a fifth was destroyed after being pummeled by rocks as it went through the asteroid belt and made a swipe by Jupiter.
As far as the metallic structures, they were underground cities and ecosystems, called Sub-Earths, with a realistic atmosphere composed of 70% Nitrogen, 25% Oxygen, and 5% trace gases. They also housed about 1,000 families each. Unfortunately, many were killed in these because of the tremendous g-forces at impact. However, as these Sub-Earth wore on through the solar system, and eventually the galaxy, societies in these lived on for millions of years on efficient nuclear power as Sub-Earths slowly saturated the universe and deviated from each other, losing contact forever.
Eventually, one Sub-Earth landed on a geologically active planet of walls hundreds of miles tall and temperatures varying from -300F during the worst volcanic activity up to 1000F during thins in the atmosphere. The planet was ten times the size of Jupiter and orbited a main-sequence star between the triple spearhead nebula’s three columns, each four light years tall and stunningly beautiful every inch. Though the atmosphere of the planet was extraordinarily thick, hundreds of times thicker than the one on Earth, severe radiation leaked through causing mutations in the humans. Most of the mutations simply killed off the humans while others caused deformations in their bodies and other malfunctions. However, this and random breeding among them for some generations eventually lead to one genetic combination that could thrive on this planet, Homo Stiria, or stone man. I guess that’s a prelude to what I’m about to tell you if you want one.

Remember, think Sci-Fi about this. What should the rest of the story be about? I already have the Homo Stiria set. They will be hard-skinned giant industrial homonoids. They will be 10' tall, mass 1000lbs aviordupois (note the use of the word "mass" and not "weigh" for deviations in the quantity of g). They will be grey skinned and not have many visual characteristics defining one from the other other than face. They will be keen on smell and distinguish many things this way. They will also be immensly powerful and be able to break huge boulders and eat rocks digesting the minerals out of them. They will be a peaceful, hardworking society with no real government. They will also be an spiritually integral people. This story will be written in 1st person semi-minor. Opinions?
I don't know, so this is my signature.
