My First Time At The Drags

Sun May 05, 2002 2:49 am

Well me being the big time street racer that I am, after racing light to light and showing up at the organized illegal drags, I decided to check out the legal drags at the near raceway (Portland Intl. Raceway) and get some timeslips on the 1/8th mile. Remember this is my first time at legal drags so I was nervious, so I got to the entry gate after waiting in line for an hour and a half paid my 15 dollars and went on to tech to get my numbers and got in line for the high school class. Little did I know I got paired up with a 66 stang that was build and running NOS. (Remember I have a 1990 VW GOLF) well I knew my Honda killer had no chance with a built mustang but I was here for the experience not to win, so we get to the light we got staged and the light turned green and punched it. Right on the green light I punched it gave it to much gas popped the clutch and sat there spinning out while he was gone I ran 11.984 (horrible). Next race I was pared up agianst him agian but this time I knew what I was doing so I ran 11.296 Not bad considering all the other four cylinders where running high 11's low 12's, next race I got paired up agianst the same guy and did kinda bad because I ran 11.402 could of done better. Finally after racing the same guy three time the staging guy walks up to me and says "tell you what you go last and you will run by your self and you will go on the the next round" (remember this is bracket racing and the elemanations started) so I got a free ride and ran my best time yet and got 11.233, and my last race of the day I ran agianst a built chevy blazer but I ran 11.233 agian which was good but I was elemanated and went home. I wish my clutch was not slipping because I know my car is capable of running 11 sec flat. I will do I little fine tuning and go agian next week.

Right on dude! I love drag racing, was raised around. I prefer 1/4 mile action though. I have a 1955 Chevy with a 327 ci engine. I hope to 1/4 mile race it someday and hope to run around 12.90 seconds in the 1/4 mile.

I haven't race in 5 or 6 years, but I'm gonna start again soon. It's very nerve racking the first time you go. But, the nerves calm down after a while and you really start to enjoy it. I've got 5 1st places and 2 runner ups, looking forward to adding to them!

Just remember, the track is much safer than the street.

You never mentioned your trap speed...How much was it? Trap speed is a better indicator of power, or rather, what the car would be capable of if you can "hook up". I never did care much for 1/8 mile tracks due to 2 reasons: 1) Weird "yardstick" for me to relate to since my whole mindset is geared toward the quarter. 2) Not enough time to "reel in" someone or redeem yourself in a furious top-end charge in the higher gears and make up for a lousy launch. -- FWIW: A ballpark figure for converting an 1/8th mile time to 1/4 mile is multiply by 1.55... Hence: Your 1/4 mile time would be about 17.4 seconds. I figure you'd hit about 78-80 mph in the quarter. It's not always accurate though and does not refer to trap speeds.
