Most Palestinians see nothing to celebrate on Jerusalem Day, especially since Jewish settlers are increasingly encroaching on their neighbourhoods with the support of the municipality and government. Yesterday, a group of settlers took over yet another building in the Sheikh Jarrah area, which was exclusively Palestinian for half a century.
Sheikh Jarrah is being transformed, West Bank-style, into a mixed area where settlers have the political and coercive power. They have ambitiously called the house, tucked in between Arab residences, the "Simon’s Heritage Neighbourhood". "We aspire that it will become a prosperous neighbourhood with a lot of people," said Tahel Elinson, a settler activist.
The dilapidated building with the Israeli flag is the first offshoot of another "neighbourhood" in Sheikh Jarah, called "Simon the Just", where three hilltop settler houses are guarded by two security booths. For the benefit of the settlers of "Simon the Just", an asphalt road was paved last month to access their buildings.
The left fork of the road, which accesses a larger number of Arab houses, remains unpaved. "They want to take our neighbourhood house by house," said a Palestinian woman who asked not to be identified. "They don’t want co-existence, they just want all the land."
